(O)Healy;
Variant Spellings; Haly, Healey, Heally, Heily, Hely, Hilo, Kerisk, Kerrish, Kerrisk O'Healihy, O'Healy.
There are two septs of the (O)Healys, the first is situated near Lough Arrow in County Sligo and is called O hEilidhe (claimant) in Irish. The second Healy sept has territory in Muskerry, County Cork and in Irish is O hEealaigh. The name is entitled to the O prefix but few have resumed it.
Patrick Healy (d.1579) Bishop of Mayo was executed for his religion; John Healy (1841-1918), was Archbishop of Tuam. The name Healy-Hutchinson became popular with the sept and is in memory of Francis Healy who married an heiress named Hutchinson, and assumed her name.
Timothy Healy (1855-1931), was the first Governor-General of the Irish Free State; Maurice Healy (1887-1943), a barrister wrote popular books about wine and law including The Old Munster Circuit. John Edward Healy (1877-1983), was editor of the Irish Times for 27 years.
