(O)Grady;
Variant Spellings; Brady, Graddy, Gready, O'Grady, O'Gready.
O'Grady is a Co. Clare name and their original fortress was Inis Cealtra on Lough Derg. Conflict with the neighboring O'Briens forced the O'Gradys to move to Co. Limerick.
In Irish the name is O Gradaigh or amiable in Gaelic.
In the reign of Henry VIII some family members changed the name to the more English sounding Brady. Hugh Brady was the first Protestant Bishop of Meath. In penal times Darby O'Grady saved his neck and his lands by marrying the Protestant, Faith Standish and ever since Standish has been a traditional O'Grady first name
Standish O'Grady (1766-1844), was the prosecutor in the trial of Robert Emmet and he later he became Chief Baron of the Exchequer of Ireland. Standish James O'Grady (1846-1928), wrote novels and children books drawing on themes of Celtic mythology. He is credited with instilling a sense of pride in country in the young.
In the US the great grandson of a Co. Clare O'Grady is Cassius O'Grady Clay also known as Muhammad Ali.
The motto of the O'Grady's is 'Vulneratus non Victus'.
