This Mac name belongs in Ulster for the most part, the O prefix occurs at times due to confusion as to which prefix is correct. Today the sept is to be found in their old territories of counties Antrim and Down.
In Irish the name is Mac Giolla Mhuire or the 'son of the follower of Mary'. The eponymous ancestor of this sept was one Mac Giolla Mhuire O Morna.
Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore was (1829-1892) was a composer and bandmaster and more recently the serial killer Gary Gilmore was executed by firing squad in Utah in 1977.
