Fox is a name that in Ireland has both English and Irish roots. The Irish Foxes apparently are descended from one Tadhg O Catharnaigh (Kearney in English) who was nicknamed Sionnach or the Fox. This name Sionnach has given rise to the variant English spellings of the name that are listed above.
The original Sionnach was Chief in Co Meath, though today the name is found mainly in Dublin, Leitrim, Longford and Tyrone.
Charlotte Fox (1864-1916) was a collector of Irish folk songs and founded The Irish Folk Song Society.
Vicente Fox Quesada, the present (2000) President of Mexico is descended from this family.
The motto of the Fox coat of arms is 'Sionnach Abu' which is translated as 'Fox to Victory'.
