(Mac)Evoy;

After the failed O'Neill rebellion and the ensuing Plantation of Ulster, the leading members of the MacEvoy sept were transferred to Co. Kerry. Nevertheless, the more humble members of the same sept remained in place in Co. Leix.

In Irish the sept was Mac Fhiodhbhuidhe; another separate sept was the Mac Giolla Buidhe, which might be translated as the Son of the Fair-haired Servant and is anglicized to MacElwee or MacGilloway. The MacVeagh sept is associated with the MacEvoys and in Irish is Mac an Bheatha (Son of the Living)

Francis MacEvoy (1751-1804) was the President of the Royal College of Surgeons and in our own time Timothy McVeagh, the Oklahoma City bomber bears the MacVeagh name.
