This is a Norman name and the prime ancestor of the family was Sir Richard Staunton who acquired territories in Co. Mayo. They became truly hibernicized forming a sept like their Irish neighbors.
Not only did they adopt Irish customs the Stauntons also adopted an Irish name. The family began to be called Mac an Mhilidh (Son of the Knight). However the name Staunton was also retained by the family.
In the nineteenth century John MacEvilly was bishop of Galway and Archbishop of Tuam. Michael Staunton (1788-1870), was Lord Mayor of Dublin.
