Eustace;

Variant Spellings; Eustance, Eustice, Eustis, FitzEustace, Ustace.

Eustace is a Norman name and is associated with county Kildare. Until the English began to establish control of the country in the seventeenth century the Eustaces were loyal and productive servants of the crown. There were at least four Eustace Lord Chancellors and in 1454 Sir Edward FitzEustace was Lord Deputy.

Eustace is derived from the Latin christian name Eustacius or fruitful. In Irish it is Iustas.

Together with their Gaelic neighbors they lost their lands and their influence in the Stuart cause. Many members of the family followed James II to France.

Rev. John Chetwode Eustace (1760-1815) was professor of literature at Maynooth College.
