In Irish the name is Mac Giolla Rua (son of the servant of the red haired)). This sept is from Fermanagh where they lived on the east shore of Lough Erne and they are still to be found there. Today they are to be seen in Co. Leitrim as MacGilleroy and in Roscommon town as Kilroy and Kilroe.
Rev. John MacElroy, S.J., an United Irishman was a missionary and church builder in America. Dr. Robert MacElroy (d. 1872) was a professor of history at Princeton and at Oxford, while Norman Thomas Gilroy, Archbishop of Sidney was created a cardinal in 1946.
