Variant Spellings; Dineen, Dun, Dunne, Kildunn, McDunn, O'Dunn.
This name is also found in Great Britain but the Irish Dunnes seemed to have originated in Co. Leix and it is there that the name is found in the greatest numbers today. The usual Gaelic prefixes are not being resumed with the name; in Ulster the name is usually written as Dunn.
In Irish the name is O Duinn and is derived from donn (brown).
In the twelfth century Giolla-na-Naomh O Duinn was the chief poet of Leinster. The sept was noted for its anti-English activities and as a result many of them fled to the continent; James O'Dunne (1700-1758) was bishop of Ossory and spent most of his life in France. Today Dunne's Stores is a countrywide chain of department stores.
The motto of the Dunnes is Mullach Abu or 'The Chief to Victory'.
