The Driscolls or the O'Driscolls as they are being more commonly known are a County Cork sept. Over the years they have been subjected to pressure from the O'Mahonys and the O'Donovans, so that nowadays they occupy territory around Baltimore in west Cork.
In Irish the name was O hEidersceoil later corrupted to O Drisceoil. The name also implies descent from Eidersceoil, a common ancestor. The name means messenger.
The family was prominent in the Stuart wars in Ireland, and as a result many of them went to the continent as 'Wild Geese'.
Cornelius O'Driscoll became a colonel in the French army and distinguished himself at the battle of Ondara in 1707.
