MacDonogh;

Variantb Spellings; Donaghey, Donaghy, Donogh, MacDona, MacDonagh, MacDonough, McDona, McDonagh, McDonogh, McDonough.

MacDonogh in Irish is Mac Donnchadha (son of Donnchadha). As Donnachadha is a fairly common name in Ireland it is not surprising that this family name should be found in different parts of the country.

The MacDonnogh sept which held Kanturk Castle Co. Cork was a branch of the MacCarthys and seem to have assumed that surname as MacDonnogh is now rare in that district. MacDonoghs are also found in Counties Sligo and Roscommon, while the surname Donaghy found in Tyrone and Derry is a variant of MacDonogh.

Irish-born John MacDonogh (1779-1850), was an abolitionist in the US; Thomas MacDonough an Irish-American naval officer fought admirably at the battle of Plattsburg. Thomas MacDonagh (1878-1916) was a signatory of the Irish Declaration of Independence and was shot by the British after that failed rising of 1916.

The motto of the MacDonogh coat of arms is 'Virtutis gloria merces'.
