(O)Daly;

Variant Spellings; Daily, Dawley, Dawly, Dayley, Dealy, Deely.

The O'Dalys are a literary family and they have produced poets and bards as far back as the twelfth century. As the various members of the sept were bards to chieftains scattered throughout the country the O'Daly name is found in many places.

In Irish the name is O Dalaigh meaning descended from Dalagh. The word derives from the Old Irish word Dal or 'assembly'.

The parent sept of the O'Daly is from Co. Westmeath where they were associated with the southern O'Neill. The poet Donogh Mor O'Daly (d.1240) started a branch of the sept in Co. Clare. The O'Dalys were established in Co. Cork and Cavan in a similar fashion. Diarmuid Og O'Daly was the official poet of the MacCarthys in west Cork.

The family was typically Irish, resisting English aggression and suffering greatly in the Cromwellian and Williamite wars. Robert Daly (1783-1872), Protestant Archbishop of Cashel and John Daly (1800-1875) were prominent in the revival of Gaelic culture.

Richard Daly and his son were Mayors of Chicago in the US.

The motto of the Daly coat of arms is 'Deo fidelis et regi'.
