The Cullens, although a peaceful sept, exist today where they have always been, namely in the counties of Dublin, Meath, Wicklow and Wexford.

In Irish the name is O Cuilinn and is probably derived from cuileann, a holly bush.

This sept is remarkable for its strong attachment to the Catholic Church and the first Irishman to become a cardinal was Paul Cullen (1803-1878).

The sept was prominent in South America, especially Argentina, where Domingo Cullen and Jose Maria Cullen were involved in the government of the young state.

Sir William Portus Cullen (1855-1935) lived in Australia where he was Chief Justice of New South Wales.
