(O)Boyle;
Variant Spellings; Boyle, Boal, Bog, Boil, Bole, Boylan.
The Boyles with the O prefix are an Irish family that comes from Donegal, where they shared control of the northwest with the O'Donnells and the O'Doughertys.
The name in Irish has been given as O Baoghaill or 'descended from Baoigheall'. It is derived from the Irish baoith meaning foolish and geall meaning wager.
Noteworthy of these Boyles are William Boyle (1853-1922), the Abbey Theatre playwright and Richard Boyle (1822-1908), railway engineer and hero of the Indian mutiny. This family in recent times is restoring the O prefix of the name to a large extent.
The other Boyles in Ireland are of Anglo-Irish extraction and are descended from Richard Boyle (d.1648), Earl of Cork. This individual did very well in Ireland where he acquired vast estates including those of Sir Walter Raleigh after the latter was executed. His sons were Roger Boyle (1621-1679), Earl of Orrery and Robert Boyle (1627-1691), the experimental physicist. Every schoolboy is acquainted with his Boyle's Law.
