Custom Front Bumper

and Warn 8274

There comes a point in a 4-wheeler's life when you decide that you just need to have a winch. Even though it may not be necessary, since you can almost always get into or out of a predicament with a hi-lift, shovel, and come-along, you realize that it would be a nice piece of equipment to have on your rig.

The winch after cleanup and painting   With that said, we picked up a used Warn winch model 8274 for $350 Cdn. It came with everything we needed except for a roller-fairlead and with a little cleanup and a paintjob it looked good as new.

In order to run the winch on the SPAMuri we needed to build a new front bumper. We purchased some 3/8 4x6" 'C' channel and some 1/2 inch flat stock and went to work.

We wanted to retain the push-bar so with some slicing and dicing were able to incorporate it into our new bumper as well. Also, since we didn't get a roller-fairlead with the winch and because a new one would cost around $180 we decided to make our own and incorporate it into the bumper itself. We used some 9/16 grade 8 bolts and some steel pipe with an inner diameter of 9/16. After the bumper was done we undercoated it, painted it black, and added some checkerplate to the top for some grip when standing on the bumper.

Sizing up the bumper after cutting and welding the ends Part of the old pushbar tacked onto the new bumper Test fitting the winch and finishing up the roller fairlead Finished product - it's a beautiful thing!
