The Millenium Patagonia Ride

The close of the second day was marked by what became a pattern of conflicting information about border crossings. The group had notarized papers from the KTM distributor allowing them to be taken into Argentina, but when the first crossing was attempted on day 3, it turned out that a copy had to be left with the carabineros.

In the photo here, Runyard is keeping the officials in good humor with what he claimed to be the only two jokes he knew in Chilean.

The solution:  Runyard rode down the mountain and found a place to have acceptable photocopies made at a fax machine, following some discussion and approval from the carabinero garrison commander in Liquiñue.

By mid-day, the herd was on its way toward the first crossing of the frontera.   This was a beautiful area, with thick forest and flowers growing out of rotting tree stumps, and small streams flowing down the steep hillsides.  The final photo here shows the gringos at the assumed border, with John Volkman taking this photo on his digital camera.

The currency imageos  of 5 Argentine pesos, the same value as 5 U.S. dollars.
