Guiseppe was an illiterate
peasant waterman from Acri, Cs, Calabria, Italy. A waterman is a profession that has
disappeared. Italian towns, Acri included, were built on top of tall hills, and
water would need to be carried from the communal wells and fountains in the lowlands to
peoples homes on the hill. He married Contenta Ginise #2 on 09 Dec 1866 at the Casa Communale in Acri. Guiseppe and Contenta only had one child, their son Vincenzo. When Garibaldi landed at Sicily, he counted amongst his 1000 red shirts one Guiseppe Alessio from Cosenza. While we can't say for sure that Garibaldi's Guiseppe Alessio was this Guiseppe, the timing and locations fit well. His Americanized grandchildren called him Joseph. |
