Broad-winged HawkBroad Winged Hawk ( Buteo platypterus )

The Broad-winged Hawk has white underwings with dark borders. The tail has broad black and white bands. The wings are broad and more pointed than the Red-shouldered Hawk. The Broad-winged hawk is a woodland species and perches low waiting for prey such as mice, frogs, insects or snakes. Ranges over the eastern U.S.and into southern Canada from Alberta east.




Common Black HawkCommon BlackHawk ( Buteogallus anthracinus )

The Common Black Hawk has broad and rounded wings. Its tail is short and broad. The adult is uniformly black but the tail has a broad white band and narrow white tip. It hunts from a low perch preying on crustaceans, frogs, fish and reptiles. Ranges over Mexico up into Arizona and a small area of west Texas.







Cooper's HawkCooper's Hawk ( Accipiter cooperi )

The Cooper's Hawk is distinguished from the Sharp-shinned Hawk by its longer tail and larger head. There is a stronger contrast between back and crown. It inhabits broken woodlands, streamside groves especially those with deciduous trees. It preys largely on songbirds and some small mammals. It often perches on telephone poles. Ranges over all of the U.S. and the southern portion of the Canadian Prairie Provinces, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.








Ferruginous HawkFerruginous Hawk ( Buteo regalis )

The Ferruginous Hawk has a rust colored back and shoulders, a pale head and a white tail with pale rust. The wings are long, broad and pointed. It often hovers while hunting. It perches in trees, on poles, or on the ground.. It is a fairly common over its range but may be declining. Ranges over the western U.S. and in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan.









Gray HawkGray Hawk ( Buteo nitidus )

The Gray Hawk is a tropical species and may be found in southeastern Arizona and occasionally in New Mexico. It has gray upper parts, gray-barred underparts and wing linings. The wing tips are rounded. It inhabits deciduous growth along streams with nearby open land. It preys chiefly on lizards, snakes and frogs.








Harris' HawkHarris' Hawk ( Parabuteo unicinctus )

Harris’ Hawk is a chocolate brown color with a conspicuous chestnut colored shoulder patches, leggings and wing linings. It inhabits semiarid woodland and brushland. It nests in mesquite, yucca and saguaro. Ranges over Mexico, the Baja and west Texas.
