Improving the “Ride”...
added 3/27/98
Boy, if cars could only talk. While rebuilding the front
end, I noticed that both of my front springs were tweaked.
One was twisted 20 degrees about it’s long axis, and the
other had a rather sharp bend DOWN, just in front of the
spring eye. Now, how in the h-ll does that happen?? I never
have figured that one out. But, as I mentioned, the budget
was already shot, so I ordered some used springs. At the
same time, I also ordered a set of 1” lift shackles, and poly
bushings to go with ‘em.
Now Samurais are not known for their plush ride in the first
place, even with the stock suspension in top working order.
After talking to several Sammi folks, the consensus was to
use rubber, not poly spring bushings (great timing, just
after I installed the poly ones I bought), and the cheapest,
non-gas-type shock absorber you can find, and 1” lift
shackles. After installing some $16 shocks I bought at NAPA,
the “ride” was getting better, but not great, so I removed
the front sway bar for two reasons: 1. Getting a better
ride, and 2. more off-road articulation. I noticed no
on-road handling problems as a result of it’s removal,
either.
