Do-it-yourself Manuals...
added 3/27/98
Generally speaking I’ve used dozens of the manuals put out by
Haynes, Clymers, Chilton, and Bentley over the years with
mixed success. In my experience, the closer the manual is to
being the official “factory” version (like the Bentley is for
VW's), the better they are for in-depth reference.
I have enough experience to know how to adjust valves and
change plugs, but what I need is something that tells me what
the procedure is for disassembling the transmission in
detail, for instance. This is where the Haynes-type manual
usually states: “Special skills, parts and tools are needed
for the proper disassembly, inspection, and reassembly of the
transmission. Therefore you should check on the availability
of a rebuilt unit, which will usually save you money
overall”.
Suzuki publishes their own manual, which is available through
the dealer, or Petroworks, Calmini, etc. I highly recommend
it. It is very detailed, and is an excellent reference
versus the Haynes-types. It covers everything the others
don’t in great detail, and although there is the usual “Use
Suzuki Tool number 56-34876 to extract the drive flange from
the rear output shaft”, they usually provide a good picture
of what is being done by that tool. I have found you can
either fabricate a good substitute, or use ordinary specialty
tools to get the job done.
