Pusan and Chinju

Maggie and I visited Pusan and Chinju during the three day vacation we had for Chusok (Korean Thanksgiving). It was an interesting trip as we went travelling by ourselves for the first time.

Pusan

Pusan is the second largest city and principal port of South Korea. Its population stands at 3 1\2 million and is rising steadily. It is nestled in between several mountain ridges and peaks. The name Pusan means "Cauldron Mountain".

While in Pusan we visited Pusan Tower, Chalgalch'i Fish Market and Pomosa.

This Buddhist temple was founded in 678 by priest Uisang during the reign of King Munmu, one of the greatest of the Shilla rulers. Surrounded by peaceful, deiduous forest, it is one of the largest temples in Korea - and one of the most beautiful.

Chinju

Chinju is a small city. We arrived there at 12 am and had no clue where we were going to sleep. But, when in Korea, thankfully, there is always a hagwan(motel) to be found. And one more good thing is that the patron lives behind the slidding information window! In Chinju we only had time to visit Chinju Fortress. I am sure that Maggie will agree with me in saying that the fortress was a real feast for the senses and the eyes. I wish we had had more time to visit this city.

Chinju Fortress

Chinju Fortress sits atop the bluff on the north side of the Nam River, almost in the heart of the city. There are good views from here over this handsome city and the languid river below. Inside the high walls are several places of interest as well as a number of traditional gateways and shrines.
