Lesson 1

In the following 10 lessons, letters, reading rules, words and sentences are introduced step by step.
They are based on the Qur'an and are meant to stimulate the reader to discover the Arabic text.
Reading will then just be a matter of practice.

  • The Arabic letters (here: Alif, Lâm und Ha) are in fact consonants.
  • Some letters, in this case Ha, are written differently in the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the word. Take care to recognize them. In the Qur'an, vowel signs are added in order to make a correct pronounciation easier.
  • An Alif after a makes the a long: lâ ilâha ...
  • Arabic is written from right to left.

Did you recognize the last sentence?
It is Lâ ilâha illAllah, there is no god but Allah.
  • Print each lesson.
  • Read it carefully and remember the letters.
  • Write the words and remember the way they are connected and the vowel signs are placed.
  • Try to write the most important words and sentences in beautiful calligraphy.
