Lesson 10

Surah 112 is short but it is said that it contains, in a concise way, the most important teaching of the Qur'an.
Therefore it is often recited in prayer.
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Say, He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Independent.
He does not beget, and He is not begotten - and nothing is like Him.

  • The Jîm is pronounced like j in "Jim".
  • The Zay is a voiced s like in "Rose".
  • The Tha is a voiceless th like in "bath"
  • The Za sounds almost like the Dhäl in lesson 9 only emphatic (with pressure).
  • Besides the un (see lesson 5) and the in (see lesson 7) there is also the an. However, it is written with an extra Alif except when it is used together with a Ta marbuta or a Ya.

So all letters and the most important rules for reading have been introduced, and you know, by now, a number of important words and sentences. Congratulations! As mentioned before, the rest is a matter of practice.

It is most efficient to use a bilingual edition of the Qur'an (Arabic - English) and to read a few short verses every day, preferably from the short Surahs in the last part. You can also learn some of them By heart. No more than fifteen minutes everyday, and you will be able to read properly within a few weeks, in sha'Allah.
