BUT THE LAZY BEAR

DID IT STILL

 

 

OBJECTIVE:  Students will be able to listen to the story of the Lazy Bear, recite the poem, "Up and Down," recall the details of the story and act it out.

 

Materials:  Book “The Lazy Bear”  by Brian Wildsmith, Poem, Up and Down by La-Goldia Williamson and a wagon.

 

Anticipatory Set:  The students will be asked if they have ever walked up and down a hill.

Discussion will follow.  Students will sing the song Up and Down.

 

Procedure.  Students will listen to the story.  They will recite the song every time the animals go up and down the hill.

 

Summary:  Students with help of teacher will complete the story chart below.  Then select which part they want to play and act out the story.

Each in turn, will tell the lazy bear they want to join him.  They ride up and down. Then push the lazy bear up and ride down.  Finally, they push the lazy bear in the water.

Evaluation:  Students will answer the questions below:

 

  1. How many friends did the bear invite to ride in his wagon?
  2. Name them.
  3. How much do you think the lazy bear weighed?
  4. How much do you think all of his friends weighed?
  5. Why do you think the lazy bear invited his friends to ride with him?
  6. What happened in the end?
  7. Do you think it was fair?

Follow Up:  Students will listen to the story of the Owl and the Woodpecker by Brian Wildsmith.
