In living cells, the process by which the information for the synthesis of a protein is transferred from the  DNA strand on which it is carried to the messenger  RNA strand involved in the actual synthesis.
It occurs by the formation of base pairs when a single strand of unwound DNA serves as a template for assembling the complementary nucleotides that make up the new RNA strand.
