en route to Kyongju, Korea
3:52 p.m.
In some ways Korea is very dirty, and in some ways it's very beautiful. The soil is not dirt but sand. There is a perpetual mist that makes the air feel heavy and blurs the outlines of the mountains in the distance. It has been raining all day. This country is so green and lush, like a rainforest. It's much hotter and more humid than home.
I'm having fun now. . . . Monday morning I was really nervous about the trip [around Korea], but people introduced themselves to me right away, so - as often happens - everything turned out OK in the end.
There are a lot of motorcycles in this country, and everyone carries an umbrella. . . .
