romantic

> 6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't

I think they portray all sorts of personalities
in women for example
Serena is a crybaby and ditzy but she is a loyal
friend. Amy is smart
and independant and doesn't rely on other people.
Raye is
strong-willed and independant and also very pushy.
Lita is a fighter
and doesn't think before acting and Mina is basically
like Serena.

its...EVERYTHING!
5.happy, sad, glad, mad, all different, depends
on the show, like a Knight to
Remember was so sad i cried all the way through
6.thw women that play these roles are very strong
and independent, theyre very
dood and got exactly the right jod!
7.the roles of men in sailormoon are just the
same, especially Darien's, he
got the right exact voice.
8.well, when theyre not transformed everything
kinda does, like, there are a
lot o klutzy girls i know
9.well, even though its a cartoon, id have to

10.0-10000
11.good ones, except for Serena, she cries way

12.well, all of the Japanese cartoons ive seen(I

1. Are you Male or Female?
Female
2. How old are you?
19
3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
I live in Pittsburgh, PA.
4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
I like the fact that finally girls are the strong
superheroes... they're
good role models. Besides that, it's an
all around great cartoon
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
Like a kid again ;) I feel that finally
women get to kick some butt
6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
Each of the girls is given a personality and
it's expanded. They aren't
just sitting there like SpiderMan's Mary Jane
and some of the X-Women do.
They are given all emotions and a great responsibility.
I think these girls
are good role models for kids and give them good
messages. I think they
teach abouut differences and teach kids not to
be afraid of differences. I
personally wish they'd show all of the episodes
here and stop being so
closed minded about the relatioship of two of
the Sailor Scouts. I think
that this show teaches kids about the world and
about how to be strong not
just submissive. I mean, we have Usagi/Serena
who acts alot like some
teenagers: Boys, no studying, shopping, ect.
But at the same time, she
learns to take on a greater responsibility.
Ami/Amy shows that studying
does pay off and that it leads to something greater.
She can study and
still have fun. Rei/Raye is a very
strong and stubborn individual who has
a spirituality and takes on great responsiblity
with or without her powers.
She shows another aspect of culture as well.
Mako/Lita is a tall, tomboyish
cook who really represents the other half of
women. I think she is a great
character cause she will stand up for herself
and she's not afraid to.
Minako/Mina is the supermodel intelligent one.
She teaches that there is
brains behind beauty. Haruka and Michiru
teach about having a goal and
about being different... that it can be a beautiful
thing. Setsuna shows
great responsibility, ect ect. I think
they are wonderful rolemodels.
7. What do you think about the roles of men in
Sailor Moon?
I think men are shown in the same light as the
women, but they're not as
prominent. Tuxedo Kamen/Mask/Darien supports
Sailor Moon and encourages her
to fight and to succeed. He is a very good
supporting character. When he
or any of the boyfriends are shown, they are
very kind and loving and show a
good side to the male side. The only
thing that bothered me is how
Submissive the male generals were to Queen Beryl
in the first season. They
were big whimps, but it did show that women can
have power...
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
Because of the age of the characters, the girls
are usually chasing after
the guys as they do in general society.
But they relate well to each other.
Alot of times having really friendly conversations
and having a great time
together. I think it's kinda idealistic.
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are
a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women? Is is
attainable?
No, I don't think they create any standard.
I think Sailor Moon teaches
more to be yourself and not to let others dictate
to you. Usagi/Moon is
often seen pigging out. It's a common thing
females do. None of them
obsess about their looks or put subliminal messages
in anybody's head. They
are pretty much portrayed as any teenager would
with their own insecurities.
Nowhere do they say that anybody should be like
this or this is the
standard... which is a rarity in television.
10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
I could never look like them anyway. Anime
characters aren't proportioned
to reality. I'd have to cut about ten inches
in my waist, arch my back
alot, get implants and grow taller than I am.
;) It's almost like Barbie...
how if she was real she'd probably fall over
and not be able to get up. But
if I had to choose one I could resemble it would
be Sailor Jupiter because
she is the tall and dark haired one.
11. What personality traits are exemplified in
Sailor Moon?
I think it's a mix. We have laziness, strength,
responsiblity, stubborness,
leadership, intelligence. They try to show
all types of personality traits
in all of their characters.
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon look
American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything about
Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show but I
would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do not
understand)
Most anime is drawn like that. I think
it has to do with a small facination
about American culture, but Naoko Takeuchi is
a very creative and talented
woman. So I'm sure that they'd end up with
different hair colors and eye
colors to add variations. It also makes
the main characters stand out more
than the other characters. Most of the
background characters have short
black hair and look more Japanese. But
anime characters have the sharp
faces, big eyes, wild hair, ect. So it's
in the drawing style and a
facination I suppose. I know that in the
japanese show they say their
attacks and transformations in English because
they love to pronounce
English words.
13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is
it just right?
In the version shown in the United States, it
was sensored quite a bit.
From what I've seen of the Japanese versions,
DiC and Company arej usst
paranoid. The violence isn't as bad as
it is on shows such as Power
Rangers, X-Men, and even the oh so popular
these days wresteling. It's not
as graphic as they think and it really wouldn't
have that big of an impact
on kids.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
I just think that Sailor Moon explores all kinds
of relationships that are
out there and many are still afraid off.
Sexual orientation being the big
thing and the reasons why they won't show all
of the episodes in the United
States. I think it can be used as a learning
tool.
1.Female
2.17
3.yes
4.It's a great show! It combines the kicking
butt action we all love to see
with romance. The characters (especially the
Senshi) are well written and
thier actions make them seem like somebody you
already know.
5.Umm, happy I guess. I really like the show!
But also sad because there
isn't more stuff like this here in NA.
6.I think the females of Sailor Moon are good
rolemodels, especially Usagi.
they are all very strong willed and independent.
Sometimes they seem to
depend too much on the men in their lives (ahem...Usagi!),
but I think this
must be in relation to the role of Japanese women.
7.Well, other than Mamoru, I think the male figures
in Sailor Moon take the
back burner. But I don't consider this bad judgement
on the part of the show
writers. It's a girls' show!
8.Usually with romantic undertones or in good
vs. evil situations, but
sometimes in just friendly relationships.
9.Well, they are pretty, but I don't think I
set my own standards against
them. They are just drawings, we must remember!
10.Ummm...I guess I look like Sailor Mercury
a bit, with brown hair. Oh!
That wasn't the question! Well, I think that
if I had somebody drawing me by
hand every day, I'd look pretty foxy! -seriously-
No, I don't think I'm as
pretty as them, but then I don't know too many
people who would say they
were.
11.honestly, loyality, good frienship qualities,
leadership, clutziness
(how'd that get in?)
12.This is a question I wonder about myself.
I have read many times that the
american-like characteristics of anime we derived
from Disney animation. For
instance, big eyes. The hair colors are just
a way of distinguishing
charaters.
13.I think the violence is minimal, especially
when watched by the correct
age category. If parents think there's too much
violence, they shouldn't let
their kids watch.
14.Ummm...maybe how sailor Moon has taken over
the internet? Or not!

There's a lot of sexual content in the original
version, which was a
lot vetter than the NA dubbed version, but in
the new version it's too
childish for older fans. So we take refuge in
the later english
episodes, the manga, and the internet.

In the earlier episodes the characters tend to
be shallow and typical.
But later in the series (both in NA and Jap)
the characters mature,
and they care a lot about frienship and love.

on the show.
There was violence and all kinds of other contraversial
topics, but it
was cool anyway.

a major ditz, but at times
she doenst really seem all that stupid, just
dinky. A bunch of people
talk about how their sailor suits are kind of
on the short side though.

limits in art, and I guess that they just felt
like drawing them like
"american" people. I dont think it says or has
to do with anything about

Male
> 2. How old are you?
25
> 3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
Yep, Edmonton as you know, although I'm actually
from Toronto.
> 4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
It has a good plot. I like serialized shows
much better than episodic
shows and serialised cartoons are pretty rare
in North America. I like
the humour, and I like the characters - they
have very loveable
personalities, so the viewer cares what happens
to them. I like the
romantic story too - very sweet.
> 5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
I don't feel anything; I'm a guy. Okay,
I feel drawn into the story - I
really want to know what will happen next and
even if I know what is
going to happen next, I want to see how the characters
react to it. I
feel relaxed when I watch the show too because
it's a "nice" story. It's
more innocent than most TV and at the same time
more mature.
> 6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
> limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
> strong and independent or submissive)
I think women are portrayed pretty well in Sailor
Moon. The main
characters are strong characters but they are
still feminine. Unlike
other female heroines (Xena, etc.) they actually
take a feminine approach
to solving certain problems (e.g. making friends
instead of killing
people). The original Sailor Moon story
was written by a woman, as you
probably know.
> 7. What do you think about the roles of men in Sailor Moon?
I think some of the male villians (Rubeus, Saphire,
Dimando) are very
realistic characters. Darien is okay (I
like his Tux!) but it's sometimes
unclear why he would prefer a girl like Serena
(Usagi) to someone like
Amy. I think he's a pretty good role model
of a man who is strong without
being domineering.
> 8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
The relationships that do develop seem to be very
positive ones (Usagi and
Mamoru, Molly and Melvin, Prisma and Safir, Mako
and Shinozaki).
> 9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
> beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are
a guy, does Sailor Moon
> create a standard of beauty for women? Is is
attainable?
I think the personality of the main characters
is what makes them so
attractive. There are many actresses (and
female cartoon characters) who
set a far more unrealistic standard for beauty
than the girls in Sailor
Moon do.
> 10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
> Sailor Moon?
Melvin!
> 11. What personality traits are exemplified in Sailor Moon?
Hmm, I suppose loyalty and friendship mostly.
I don't know what word to
use to label this personality trait, but the
characters are exemplary when
it comes to "forgiveness". They will always
become friends with an enemy
if they can. The concept of forgiveness
is very important in Japanese
culture. In Japanese, Sailor Moon or Tuxedo
Mask will often say
"urusanai" - "I can't forgive you" to the enemy
droid of the day before
they destroy it. I suppose the trait is
compassion.
> 12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon look
American when they were
> created in Japan? Does this say anything about
Japanese culture? (This
> is not meant as a criticism of the show but
I would like to explore this
> in my paper as it is something that I do not
understand)
Heh, heh. A lot of people say this.
Why do you say they look American?
Because they don't have narrow "asian" eyes?
Eyes are the "windows to the
soul". In theatre, stage makeup is used to enhance
the appearance of the
eyes to an audience seated at a distance. The
eyes are very important so
they are drawn large in most cartoons.
Faces with eyes that are large
relative to the head (babies, kittens, Mickey
Mouse) are perceived as cute
and attractive in almost every culture.
Drawing large eyes and small
mouths exaggerate how a woman's face appears
compared to a man's. This
makes the characters look more attractive. Small
eyed characters (e.g.
Tin-Tin) are found in adventure/action comics;
these characters are not as
"cute".
Or is it because of their hair colour? Hair
colour in Japanese anime is
not meant to be taken literally. It's main
purpose is to help the viewer
identify the characters. It also sometimes
is used to suggest something
about the character (for example, beautiful characters
are often blonde,
while very smart or sophisticated characters
will have blue hair and
hot-tempered characters will have red hair).
It's also a way for the
studio to simplfy the animation process - reusing
the same faces but with
different hair.
> 13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is
> it just right?
Seems okay to me. It is a bit more violent in Japanese.
> 14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
> paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
I don't know... anime and culture is a big topic
:-) Good luck with your
project!
1. Are you Male or Female? - Female
2. How old are you? - 15
3. Do you live in North America? If not,
what continent? - yup, North America
((USA))
4. What do you like about the show Sailor
Moon? - It's funny, and I think
((not in a sexual way or anything - I'm not that
way!)) the girl's a pretty.
It's colorful, and the action is neat.
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor
Moon? - Satisfied. Ya know, I feel
all tingly inside. hehe
6. What do you think about the roles of
women in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive) -
I really think it's a show where
girls kick butt, ya know? True, Tuxedo Mask helps
sometimes, but he doesn't
blow the monsters away. The girls work together,
teamwork, and destroy the
monsters. So I guess you could say the women
are portrayed as Strong women.
7. What do you think about the roles of
men in Sailor Moon? - They're pretty
strong too, but in a way they're submissive.
They don't play too much of a big
part..sometimes..
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor
Moon? - Umm..it kinda shows the way
they think. Like, for example, when Darien dumps
Serena in SMR, it shows both
of their points of view - Darien did it for Serena,
while Serena thinks he
just doesn't love her anymore. Ya know?
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon
create a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you
are a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women?
Is is attainable? - Ehh, not really.
It doesn'tset any standard at all - I mean, it's
just a cartoon. ^_^
10. How would you rate your own looks in
terms of the characters in
Sailor Moon? - Very different.
11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon? - All kinds. They
have the pushy ((Rei)) the dizty/funloving ((Minako))
the tomboy ((Makoto))
and the bookworm ((Ami)) and of course, the normal
teenage girl - Usagi.
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon
look American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything
about Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show
but I would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do
not understand) - Well, I really
don't know anything about that...my brother ((Tony,
Male, 13)) said maybe they
do that as it is a kind of stereo-type here:
Women with big boobs and large
eyes, guys who look really tall and handsome.
13. How much violence is there in Sailor
Moon? Could there be less or is
it just right? I don't think there's that
much, accually. From what I've seen
((the dubbed DiC ones)) there's not much. There
could be more, but then I
think it's just right.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon
that could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not
asked you about? - I can't think of
any right now.
15. How do you understand the fact that
blood types are linked to
personality traits in SM? - Nope. I've
never heard about that..
1. Are you Male or Female?
~~Female
2. How old are you?
~~15
3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
~~Canada, North America
4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
~~The fact that it's a japanimation, the storyline,
the characters, the
creator, the manga.... basically everything,...
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
~~well, when I watch the english-dubbed one I
get kind of mad because of
the *ahem* quality of the dubbing. They didn't
keep the names, they cut out
LOTS of scenes and episodes, and it's really
corny. (ex. "Wow! Look at that
hunky guy! He's such a hunk-meister!")
When I watch the oringal japanese version, I'm
happy because I'm watching a
beautiful art in motion, witha great storyline.
The english one just made
it into a after-school kids cartoon, when in
japan, anime is taken
seriously, as motion pictures are here.
6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
~~I think women in this anime are portrayed as
independant because first,
they are heroines. (And you don't see many heroines
now adays in
NorthAmerica.) And you don't see many guys in
the show. (Except Mamo-chan
^_^) And they think for themselves and do what
they can when they wnat to.
7. What do you think about the roles of men in
Sailor Moon?
~~I don't think it's a very large role. There's
basically one main guy role
and he's only there to give Sailormoon some advice
etc... but she could
still go on without him, because she really cares
for her friends, and they
are her insperation.
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
~~I'm not really sure what's meant in this question,
but I'll try. :)
I think that the girls seem to domonant more
than the men. I mean, look how
many women guys there are compared to female.
And look at the Usagi-Mamoru
realtionship... Mamoru hardly says much.... ^^;;
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are
a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women? Is is
attainable?
~~I don't think so because everyone looks and
acts their own way.
Sailormoon just happens to have beautiful girls
in it. I think they are
more role models than just something to look
at.
10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
~~Well, I'm definatly not asa pretty as these
girls, but everyone has
they're own sense of style, and everyone has
their own look. I believe
everyone is beautiful in their own way.
11. What personality traits are exemplified in
Sailor Moon?
~~umm... smart, kind, ditzy, serious, dedicated,
funny (shall I go on?) I
hope that's what is meant in this question ^^;;
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon look
American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything about
Japanese culture? (This is
not meant as a criticism of the show but I would
like to explore this in my
paper as it is something that I do not understand)
~~Okay, I think I have a theory as to
way japanese always draw
american-sh type people. If you think about (no
offence to japanese) if you
look at a bunch of japanese, you see alot of
the same thing. dark hair,
etc... north americans (and so forth) have different
qualities that
japanese don't seem to have. (different color
hair, different height,
different styles of clothing etc..) So I think
it's just easier to draw
those type of people so others can identify them
better. Well, that's what
I think anyways.
13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is
it just right?
~~Well, in the "DiC" english-dubbed series, there
is zip basically when I
comes to Sailormoon because they edited it all
out. But the orignal
japanese series has some violence. I think it
needs some violence
concidering they are evil-fighting heroines.
You can't just go around
telling people to stop being evil and call them
names right? I think it has
the right amount of violence.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
~~the japanese culture sailormoon has. (the religion,
the festivals
related, fashion, tradional clothing...etc...)
I'm really interested in
japanese culture. I think others might too.
15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
~~Japanese have a theory that you blood type
has a link to your personally.
That's why the sailormoon characters have them
known.

Yes, I live in North America
> 4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
I like the fact that the characters are so, how
can I put this, are so
human. They aren't like superheros who
don't have any problems apart from
saving the world. They are just normal
teenagers who are growing up. And
the main character isn't a perfect infallible,
never-gets-hurt-fearless-leader kind of person.
She's just human. And the
show describes her best qualities as her being
kind, honest, and friendly,
instead of making it seem important for her to
be pretty and smart.
>
>
> 5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?

It depends on the episode. If it's funny,
I laugh. But sometimes the
episodes make me want to cry. Especially
the Rini ones.
> 6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
> limit yourself to this point but for example

>
I think that it depends on the woman that they're
portraying. Some (like
Lita and Raye) are especially strong and independant
compared to others.
And some are submissive. But on a whole,
I think that women are treated
more fairly and with more respect than they usually
are in cartoons. In a
lot of(american) cartoons women are usually there
either as a sex object for
the guy to save or to keep people from suing
the company from sexual
discrimination.
> 7. What do you think about the roles of men
in Sailor Moon?
>
It's kind of hard to say, since they don't show
as much men as women. I
think that men are shown as being treated
equal to women (and are just
shown less because it's mostly a girl show) on
the show.
> 8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
>
Usually it's only when they're talking about love
or crushes or something.
This is rather annoying to me because it doesn't
show much about men's
problems, just about girl problems.
> 9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
> beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are
a guy, does Sailor Moon

It does set sort of a standard. And there
is no way that you can be as
pretty as the Sailor Scouts unless you were born
that way, or are going to
have a lot of plastic surgery. But the
message in the story isn't about
beauty (completetly) It's more about accepting
yourself for who you are.
Take the episode "The Cosmetic Caper".
Darien broke up with Serena, and
Serena went to a make-up shop and asked if make-up
could help him to like
her again. The saleslady goes "oh sure,
the thicker the make-up the more
men are attracted to you". Then Serena
bursts out at the lady "Hey there!
Darien isn't like that! He looks deeper
than how you look! You're just
trying to sell your stupid make-up!" The message
isn't beauty (completely),
it's more about personality.
> 10. How would you rate your own looks in terms

>
I could never acheive that and I'm not even going
to try because I'm
perfectally happy with myself just the way I
am.
> 11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon?

All kinds. Everybody has a different personality.
Rei is rather crabby and
aggressive, Lita is just plain aggressive, Serena
is ditzy, loyal, honest,
and kind, Amy is smart, sweet, and kind of shy,
and Mina is insecure and
tries to cover it up by being sweet and outgoing.
(not much of that is
shown in the English version)

To tell you the truth, I have no idea. Most
anime characters are drawn to
look western-like. Maybe Japanse people
like the western idea of everybody
acting different, in their society everyone is
expected to look and act
generally the same. I'm serious, they won't
allow you to go to some schools
if you perm or dye your hair. Maybe they
want to express their
individuality...

>Well when you say American, you mean the color
of the characters' hair.
It's not to represent American people, it's just
that anime characters look
practicly the same, they're simple drawings and
that's what people like. If
the animators didn't change the hair color, all
the characters would look
the same. Has for the big eyes, that's something
that they stolled from
Dizney a long time ago.

All right, that stops here ! You have a lot of
questions about the show
itself, so I'll send you a Sailor Moon FAQ help
document. In there, you'll
find practically everything you're looking for.
Judging by your first
questions about the show, I'll assume that you've
only seen the American
version, the crapiest version that was ever made
! I've seen all of the
Original Japanese versions and the American dubs.
The first Sailor Moon
serie (battle against the Dark Kingdom) and the
second season (Sailor Moon
R) are the only ones that have been translated
and they're not the best
ones. The S, Super S and Sailor Stars series
are better. They have more
story line, more action, less kidding around
and less talking. My favorite
is the S serie because they're on some sort of
treasure hunt. Go surf the
web and look for some subtitle Sailor Moon videos
in Real Player format. Try
this place:
#1. Female
#2. 16
#3. Yes
#4. The animation and face expressions, also the storyline.
#5. Happy. Excited about what happens next,
how the characters will
react.
#6. They're individual, strong. They're
not dependent on Tuxedo Mask to
get them out of a situation.
#7. They're there when the girls need them,
they back them up and lend
support.
#8. They are their own person, strong, caring,
friendly. The villians
are another thing (well most of them anyways).
#9. Not really. They're different, pretty,
but I know I'll never look
like them. It's unrealistic, it's an anime.
#10. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being alot,
1 being nothing alike. Maybe a
4.
#11. Friendship, support.
#12. I think Japanese have an interest in
Americans. Like in alot of
places (guessing) people look for differences
in other cultures that
aren't the same as thiers, and they try to grab
some of that difference
because it IS different.
#13. Not alot. It's just right. It's not
the center of the show, the
show doesn't revolve around it.
#14. Would you incorporate anything from
Sailor Moon into your own
life? (i.e. It's morals, characters lifestyles,
their beliefs, etc.)
#15. It's like astrologic signs in the U.S.

strong when they need her.

TO DO WITH IT BESIDE JUST FOR A
PERSONAL PROFILE ON THE WEB.
1. Female
2. 13 yrs old.
3. I live in North America
4. I absolutely adore Sailor Moon. I like the
way the characters are drawn. I
like the basic plot of Sailor Moon, and I admire
a lot of the sailor senshi
(scouts) and want to be like them. I view them
as role models, and a few of
them are my idols.. in a way. I like the way
the girls are portrayed in Sailor
Moon... I also like that the superheroes are
all girls... except for one guy.
I like Sailor Moon in that it can make me laugh,
cry, and hold my breath in
suspense in a single episode.
5. Sailor Moon makes me feel good inside when
I watch it, but it also makes me
feel a little jealous, because the girls are
all so perfect! It fills me with
longing... a desire to be more like them... have
a personality and character
like them... talk like them... have their talents,
etc.
6. I think Sailor Moon portrays the sailor scouts
as strong, independent,
multi-talented, beautiful women. The way it portrays
the other girls.. the
minor characters are more vague... it could be
both submissive and assertive.
It depends on the character. Some girls are pictured
as being submissive, as
part of their personality and others are strong...
so it's both.
7. The roles of men are also not that clear. Mostly
they are pictured as
potential boyfriends :). They aren't really portrayed
as that strong, in my
opinion... in some ways they are even weak. For
example... the way Serena
treats MElvin, or the way Raye dominates over
poor Chad.... they might be
thought of as weak.. But Darien on the other
hand is probably the only guy
portrayed as truly strong.... him and maybe Andrew...
but andrew is just a
cute guy... Darien is more than just a hunk.
8) I don't really get this question... but I think
that men and women relate
in a mostly positive way.The women might be thought
of as the dominating part
of the relationship...
9) Sailor Moon creates a standard for my own beauty.
That is true, but I know
it is unattainable, because it's just not possible
for one to be that
gorgeous, but I still fantasize, over how that
would be like. I get my
standard of beauty from a mix of the various
Sailor Scouts. I would like to
have a body like they have... particularly Haruka's.
(Sailor Uranus's) I am
attracted to her more masculine figure. The girls
all share an impossibly
skinny waist, and impossibly huge soulful eyes,
but I like Haruka's broad
shoulders, and I am constantly wanting to have
broad shoulders... and i want
to have long legs like theirs (I have very short
legs) And so I go around
running, swimming, in the hopes that i may come
just a little bit close to the
way they look. But I know it is futile... I was
born short, stocky, and hefty,
and I can't change that.. but I still dream about
it and try.
10) I think I'm butt-ugly compared to them.
11) It is a whole mix of things. but the one trait
that shows up in each girl
is strength... strength and courage... even in
the clumsy Moon. It may be
different for each girl, but they each have strength.
Amy has quiet strength,
Lita has very noticable strength and a quieter
strength, Moon has strength
that doesn't show up very often... they all are
strong.
12) I read somewhere that it had to do with some
form of theater Japan has in
which some Western plays would be acted out,
and the actors would dress up as
Caucasians and i guess those caucasion features
spread to anime... The
japanese don't think of those features as caucasian
,the way we do.
13) THere is not much violence. It is just right...
of course... there's more
in the japanese version than in the NA version,
but it's still positive
violence. the good guys bashing the bad guys.
crime doesn't pay.
14) Yes... except I can't think of any right now.
but one you may think about
is the relationship between parents and their
children..
15) I understnad that they are like the zodiac...
certain blood types are
supposed to act in certain ways... O's are outgoing,
A's are determined? etc.
the way Leo's are dramatic, Cancers perceptive...
etc.
1. Are you Male or Female?
Female

6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as

some of the women are portrayed as submissive
waiting for some guy to

portray really life in the fact that there are
some girls that just wait
for a guy to save them and others who just do
it by them selves (ahem me
)
7. What do you think about the roles of men in
Sailor Moon?
old fashioned, they have to pay for the girls
and things like that.

beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are

are not attainable.

it might, i really dont know but it is a good
question and one that i
have ask myself

Could there be less or is
it just right?
its just right, i mean it could be worse
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
nope
15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
i don't know i just do.

1. Are you Male or Female?
Female
2. How old are you?
16
3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
Yes, United States
4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
It has a very interesting story line and characters
you can relate to
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
Happy!
6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
I think that the women chracters are pretty independent
and strong
7. What do you think about the roles of men in
Sailor Moon?
About the same as above
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
Well the one thing that drives me crazy about
this show it that it seems
that the guys and girls can never be JUST friends
they always have to be
going together, that just isn't a too realistic
picture for this day and
age.
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are
a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women? Is is
attainable?
*lol* No, I don't wake up every moring and say
oh I want to look JUST
like such and such in Sailor Moon that's stupid
;p
10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
around the middle but I really don't care
11. What personality traits are exemplified in
Sailor Moon?
being a *true* friend, being caring, teamwork,
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon look
American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything about
Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show but I
would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do not
understand)
I think that the characters look like that,
because it often seems like
the whole world revoles around the *white* race,
like in movies and in
the music and maybe the Japanese relate to this
more, I mean you don't
see and Africian or Hispanic characters in the
show ether.
13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is
it just right?
I think it's just about right
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
*lol* The importance of having a boyfriend
15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
I understand that in the Japanese culture blood
types are a very
important factor like in meeting people or in
telling about yourself, I
think it's kinda interesting that this is how
the characters got thier
personalities.
1. Are you Male or Female? Female
>
>2. How old are you? 15
>
>3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent? Yes, North
America
>
>4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
It kicks-ass. It is
funny, I love when they fight and it is just
totally "wicked cool"
>
>5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
Great. I love when it
comes on and I get excited when they start fighting,
even though I've
seen every episode like a million times each
>
>6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
>limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
>strong and independent or submissive)They don't
place women into one
catagorie. for example Sailor Moon is a ditz
but is strong when it comes
to helping people in need, Sailor Jupiter is
strong, boy-crazy and
athletic, Sailor Mars is a bitchy type but aggresive,
and Sailor Mercury
is smart strong and a good person. Each are kind
of similar but none are
a stereotypical girl.
>
>7. What do you think about the roles of men
in Sailor Moon? They're
good they don't have messages like men are better
and stronger then
women they are all even out and they make most
of them so damn cute.

good-willed, compastionate, etc., etc.

Japanese culture? (This

this
>in my paper as it is something that I do not

well i have done reserch on this before,
it is said that american
faces and figures are easily drawn compared to
that of drwing a face of
a Japanese person/character. People do eyes very
differently but they
don't make them really small so that people
can see the eyes of a
character, and in japanese animations you could
see that almost all
charcters drawn in am anime are american faced,
and some of them have
different colored hair(exp:blue, purple, white~on
a young person)it is
just their style and technique of drawing.
>
>13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or
is
>it just right? there is not much at all. In
my opinion it has less
violence then what American cartoons and other
action shows have.
>
>14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
>paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about? Sailor moon
deals with all sorts of matters. for example
how Sailor Uranus and
Sailor Neptune are lesbians, they don't make
a big deal about it. and
they ease it into the situation.
>
>15. How do you understand the fact that blood

never really thought
about blood types being linked to the personality
of a person. But I
have noticed that they often do tell you what
blood type a character is
>
Are you Male or Female?
Feamale
2. How old are you?
17
3. Do you live in North America? If not,
what continent?
yes, NC
4. What do you like about the show Sailor
Moon?
anime is the only type of cartoons i like,
it's more the story line i like
than the fact it is a cartoon!
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor
Moon?
i get really into it like anyone does who
is hooked on a mini series or a
soap opera
6. What do you think about the roles of
women in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
each charicter on sailor moon seems to
be of a different stereo type (ex-
lita is the athlete of the group, rei is the
bold one, serena is kind of the
cry baby trying to get over her fears, ami is
smart and mina seems to be kind
of a peace maker) and of coarse they are shown
as strong and independent ;)
7. What do you think about the roles of
men in Sailor Moon?
the roles of male charicters are just as
important as women
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor
Moon?
it depends on what kind of relation ship
each pair has some are friends and
some are more than friends and some dispise each
other!
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon
create a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you
are a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women?
Is is attainable?
living in the US i have obviously seen
more of those episodes, and yes the
charicters are.....very trim....but when they
write the plots they seem to
sneek in a few things here and there about beauty
on the inside and looks
arent all that matters (Ex- the lonnie leni/peggy
jones episode)<-- a painter
who is very shy and goes by a pen name askes
serena and darien to modle for
her
10. How would you rate your own looks in
terms of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
i must say that i am nowhere neaar as thin
and trim as they are...but how
many people are?
11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon?
it really depends on the charicter if you
mean sailor moon herself.....a girl
unsure of herself but learning to be strong
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon
look American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything
about Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show
but I would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do
not understand)
i do know that big eyes are very popular
in japen and some charicters do
have japanese trraits more than others (rei with
dark hair and eyes as well as
the outter senshi who were not introduced in
the american version and some
minor charicters) not ALL anime is like that
though but who says you have to
be japanese to live in japan? besides there is
a complete color range in
traits such as eyes and hair....(blue red yellow
black purple green
pink....you name it!)
13. How much violence is there in Sailor
Moon? Could there be less or is
it just right?there is no more violence
in sailor moon than there is in any
other cartoon, i must say it is a little different
in the japanese version
though....but i was very dissapointed when it
was canceled due to the fact it
was innaprpriate for kids(such as some charicters
being gay or lesbiens...some
male charicters were changed to female for that
very fact for the american
versin EX-zoisite)...they could have shown it
at night...
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon
that could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not
asked you about?
i think it is very immature that americans
are not as accepting to somethings
likeother countrys....this is the only place
that tries to cencor minor things
which caused a good sto be canceled!
15. How do you understand the fact that
blood types are linked to
personality traits in SM?many cultures
such as romans and such believed your
blood type determined your personality....and
it is believed that type "o" is
the origanal blood type which the other types
eventualy branched off of
>>
1) femal
2) 17
3) yes
4) I like the romance, the action, and the fact
that the chicks rule!
5)I get goosbumps and teary-eyed when I watch
certain key episodes, like "A
Crystal Clear Destiny" and "Day of Destiny"
6)I love how the women of Sailor Moon are in
charge. They might be a little
scared, but they never back down when they're
friends need them.
7)The men are basically there to motivate the
scouts and occasionally help
them out of sticky situations.
8)
9)yes, it does create a beauty standard of being
skinny with long hair (except
for Amy). I suppose it is attainable for
some girls, but you have to work
with what you've got.
10)I look like Serena, but my hair isn't nearly
as long!
11) Happy, bubbly, personalities. Compassion
for other people, loyalty to
friends
12) I've read online that the characters look
American because the Japanes
atists modeled them after American Disney characters.
13)It has violence, but not an extremely large
amount. It can be noted that
the Sailor Scouts are never responsible for the
deaths of the villians. Also,
they never start a fight, they only defend others.
14)
15)
1. I am Female.
2. I am fourteen years old. (Same as the inners!!)
3. Yes, I live in North America. (Canada)
4. I like many things about the show. In particular,
I enjoy watching a
show about a team of female heroines. I think
it is about time girls had
their chance at heroism. I also think the situations
are usually very
funny, and some characters are good role-models
for me. (SailorMercury!)
5. When I watch SailorMoon, I get very absorbed
into the episode even if
I have already seen it several times. It's one
of my favorite shows on
TV and plus it's anime.
6. I think that most female characters are strong
in the sense that they
are powerful and most guys are not. (like TuxedoMask,
YUK!) The main
five are a close group of friends, and I find
that to be very realistic
since just about everyone has a group to hang
out with. Also, they are
very real, as in not invincible, and they -do-
need help sometimes, just
not all the time.
7. One thing I have noticed is that there aren't
that many men in
SailorMoon. Most guys are secondary characters,
like villains and
classemates. The only male star is TuxedoMask,
and he is relatively
weak. All he does is throw roses and make speeches.
But, the romance and
mystery around him and his relationship with
Serena/Usagi make for a
good plotline.
8. It depends on the characters. Some, like Amy/Ami
are shy about their
emotions and seem to have trouble relating to
others. For example, in
English episode 37 she doesn't want to admit
her feelings for Greg/Ryo.
Others, like Lita/Mako and Mina/Minako are not
afraid to pursue a man
they like, sometimes regardless of the guy's
feelings for them!
9. No, personnally I set no standards for my looks
by someone else's
looks. I do think the SailorTeam is a very cute
group though!
10. I think I look like SailorJupiter and/or SailorNeptune.
I like the
way I look and do not wear much makeup.
11. Cheerfulness, persistance, independance, etc.
12. The big eyes of many anime characters are
derived from Disney's
animations. It is now pretty common to see big
eyes and small noses on
many anime characters, especially girls, and
SailorMoon is no exception.
The hair color in SailorMoon and many anime can
be just about anything
under the sun. I have no idea why, and I don't
know why most characters
are white instead of oriental.
13. I think that the English dub is over-censored.
The original Japanese
version had very little violence and was much
more realistic. There are
a few episodes where a character is shown raising
their hand as if to
slap someone, but nothing happens. The dubbers
also changed alot of
dialogue where it wasn't necessary and cut some
scenes and episodes for
no apparent reason. Some cuts are reasonable,
for example the
transformation scenes showed breast line on the
girls and these lines
were erases by the dubbers. Others are ridiculous.
The best example I
can give is the ending of the first storyline:
English #40 Japanese
#45/46. The dubbers cut scenes of the sailors
getting killed and has
them simply "disapear" without much explanation.
They shredded the
original episodes into one episode that makes
little sense if you really
think about it. I have seen the original episodes
and they wasn't really
that much violence. I see no reason for so much
editing.
14. Not that I can think of.
15. Blood types are an important part of the Japanese
popular culture,
especially since the mid-80s.
Here is a rough guide to blood types and personality:
A: People with type A blood are said to be calm,
composed and very level
headed and serious. They have a firm character
and are reliable and
trustworthy. They generally try to hide their
emotions to apear strong,
but they have a fragile, nervous side too.
Sailors Mercury and Pluto have this blood type.
B: People with type B blood are said to be curious
and interested in
everything. They tend to have to many interests
and hobbies and get all
excited about something suddenly and then just
drop it just as suddenly.
But, they do manage to hold on to the things
and people that are really
important. They also like to excel in thing rather
than be just average.
They are cheerful and full of energy and enthusiasm.
Sailors Venus and Uranus have this blood type.
O: Type O people are the mood-setters of a group.
They have an image of
taking it easy, being peaceful and carefree.
They are also generous and
benevolent. They also have a stuborn and strong-willed
side. They like
to have their own opinions on things. They also
have flexibility and
like experimenting with new things. They often
slip up and make big
blunders, but that just makes them lovable.
Sailors Jupiter, Moon, Chibi-Moon and Neptune
have this blood type.
AB: AB blooded people are said to have a delicate
sensitivity. They are
considerate and careful. They are also strict
with themselves and those
close to them. They often become sentimental,
and tend to think to
deeply about things. They have a lot of friends,
but need time to
themselves.
Sailors Mars and Saturn have this blood type.
Sources: Castle in the Sky article about blood
types. Sailor blood types
from Japanese manga volume 10.
>1. Are you Male or Female?
Female
>2. How old are you?
16
>3. Do you live in North America?
Yes
>4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
I think the original plot was excellent, and
the "amercainized" one is good ,
until you see the original. I also think that
the animation is superb, and the
music is very pretty. It's nice to see a show
centered more around females, when
lots of our programing is either centered around
male characters or how they
would percieve the characters.
>5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
I'm an anime obssesive, so it makes me very happy,
"giddy" is the word my
grandmother uses I get very into the plot line
and yell at them when they do
stupid things and cry when something goes wrong.
>6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
>limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
>strong and independent or submissive)
I think women are showed as exceptionally powerful
and emotionally strong, the
characters all have personalities we can relate
with, because {in some cases} we
have some of the same {albeit milder} problems.
>7. What do you think about the roles of men
in Sailor Moon?
I think they're thrown in to prove how strong
the women are, and to give the
girls people to attach to, besides Darien is
needed to keep the plot together,
just the fact that everything relates to him
keeps Serena functioning.
>8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
Lots of both get attacked. {sorry, it's kind
of late and I don't quite
understand the question}
>9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
>beauty? If yes is that attainable?
I try not to judge how I should look by how others
do, but I think that it sets
a standard. It can be attainable, but I think
that the focus on beauty is also
from a beauty of character stand point, they're
also beautiful on the inside.
>10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
>Sailor Moon?
I'm a million miles away from them, over-weight,
out of shape, and grouchier
than Raye.
>11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon?
>
>12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon look
American when they were
>created in Japan? Does this say anything about
Japanese culture? (This
>is not meant as a criticism of the show but

understand)
I think that they were drawn that way to represent
different cultures. Most
likely they were just trying to set it all apart
from normal shows, after all
women have less freedom in Japan but we've got
all kinds of rights here in the
US.
>13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is
>it just right?
I don't think that the show is particularly violent.
If there were any less you
wouldn't really get the feeling that the MOTD
{monster of the day} was really
destroyed
>14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
>paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
I don't think so.
>15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to
>personality traits in SM?
not at all, sorry.
1. Are you Male or Female?
female
2. How old are you?
14
3. Do you live in North America? If not,
what continent?
yep
4. What do you like about the show Sailor
Moon?
I think it is just a wonderful pice of
work and excelent Anime animation, and
the fighting and sailor jupiter helps to! The
story is so great and makes me
wanna watch it 24/7! Each eppisode leaves you
screaming for more
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor
Moon?
I feel that everyone should leave me alone
so i can watch one of the two best
shows in the whole world! (other is dragonballz),
if you mean emotionaly i
feel.... umm.... hmmm..... like " this show is
so awsome " for the most part i
don't think or really pay attention to what i
feel cuz i am so absorbed with
the show.
6. What do you think about the roles of
women in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
Well, i think that it shows that it doesn't
matter how young or old you are
if you put your mind to it girl power will get
you anywhere.... and it also
shows that the best way to fool a girl is to
mess with her heart cuz she can
be easily decived.... and it ALSO says that us
girls can be fooled easy, even
if we wern't being pulled around by the heart,
and that it is easy to trick
wemon.... buuuuut for the most part not that
we are fools....
7. What do you think about the roles of
men in Sailor Moon?
that they are seen to be more powerful,
cuz tuxie always scares them off and
fools the moster type dudes, and the girls are
weak and everything.... but
also most of the men are chickens and run aways
whining and crying like babies
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor
Moon?
ummm... i don't compleately get what you
exactly mean in this question.... so
i am sorry i cannot answer this one.... i just
don't get it
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon
create a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you
are a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women?
Is is attainable?
I know these are cartoon characters who
are always tall thin, and beautiful
with out any skin problems what so ever.... and
i know i never will be able to
look like, or anything close to , that so...
no.... it's just a wicked cool
cartoon i watch and has no impact what so ever
on how i look at my self and
how i think i should look
10. How would you rate your own looks in
terms of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
i never have compared myslef to a cartoon,
and i am not about to... survey or
no survey i will not compare
11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon?
hold on.... let me look up that BIG word!
if that word means what i think it
means.... i don't see any..... cuz there are
all kinds of differnt
personalities in the idffernt characters..
rei is bossy, ami is bookworm and esily made
to do things, lita is though and
ready to fight, mina is caring and understanding
(so are the others but not as
much as her), serena is clumsy and late all the
time... and then she becomes
more in tuned with the world and acts not quit
as clutzy, darien is cold some
times and the other times he is very loving and
he will do anything for
sernea, luna is there to keep them in tact...
like a mother..... and so on and
so on..... every character has differnt personality
traits and i don't think
they left any out
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon
look American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything
about Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show
but I would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do
not understand)
i find that a lot of the anime does have
that same thing in common.... i am
not sure why... maybe they just think it looks
better animation.... im not too
clear on that one either
13. How much violence is there in Sailor
Moon? Could there be less or is
it just right?
i think it is fine in fact i think there
could be more... especially compared
to DBZ, but it makes me angry that they edit
all the violence is cut out just
because they think it is not appropreate for
american televison... and i think
that if it isn't decent that the people who are
offended and do not like it
don't have to watch it... why punish everyone
else to comfort weak dorklings?
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon
that could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not
asked you about?
there you go with those big words again...
but if i understand this
fully,.... no
15. How do you understand the fact that
blood types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
i do not understand them at all! i just figured
that blood is blood and it is
how they are... but i guess that i am wrong!
oops!
1. Are you Male or Female?
both female
>
>2. How old are you?
both 15
>
>3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
yup we do =)
>

everything! this show just rocks, ..if we told
you it would be SO long
itll crash the computer! *j/k*

similar / western

1. Are you Male or Female?
Female
2. How old are you?
17
3. Do you live in North America? If not,
what continent?
North America
4. What do you like about the show Sailor
Moon?
It has a good plot and a lot of romance and drama,
as well as a well-balanced
cast. It's fun to watch and interesting.
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor
Moon?
I really get into it sometimes... (i.e. feel
sad when characters are hurt,
etc.)
6. What do you think about the roles of
women in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
Well...that depends. Mainly, the female characters
are made to be strong and
powerful, but in some scenes they seem weaker.
Also, Usagi/Serena is kind of a
ditzy character sometimes, and she depends on
Mamoru/Darien a LOT.
7. What do you think about the roles of
men in Sailor Moon?
They are strong and powerful as well, but they
don't overpower the women in
the show. This is also balanced by weaker male
characters who appear
sometimes.
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor
Moon?
They usually seem about equal, and they both
depend on one another, but I
think sometimes the women depend on the men more.
However, the female
characters are the main focus of the show and
do most things for themselves.
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon
create a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you
are a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women?
Is is attainable?
I know that anime characters are drawn in a different
way than real life
humans, in a form that would be impossible to
copy. I admire the beauty of
some of the characters, but I wouldn't try to
become them.
10. How would you rate your own looks in
terms of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
Um...I have a low opinion of my physical appearance
anyway, so I'd say I'm
really ugly compared to them, especially the
Outer Senshi. =T
11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon?
Mainly loyalty to friends and Earth, as well
as friendship, love, courage and
self-esteem, inner strength, a sense of duty
to help those in need...also,
there seems to be a character for almost every
type of human personality,
which gives almost everyone a character to identify
with.
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon
look American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything
about Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show
but I would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do
not understand)
Well, all anime is drawn that way....I'm not
sure why. The characters don't
really look American either...maybe it's because
that method of design is
simple and easy to draw, yet it is distinctive.
13. How much violence is there in Sailor
Moon? Could there be less or is
it just right?
In the real Japanese, there is quite a bit of
violence, but it is toned down a
bit because it is not too graphic. Most of the
characters' attacks don't
actually cause physical injuries to the target
(the enemy is simply
disintegrated), and any injury is minimized.
The American translators have
removed most of the existing violence, which
I think is taking it too far. A
certain degree of violence is necessary for good
action scenes. I think the
Japanese method is the better way.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon
that could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not
asked you about?
Well....maybe seeing which age groups prefer
the Japanese version and which
ages prefer the American translation?
15. How do you understand the fact that
blood types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
It's kind of like the American use of Zodiac
signs. I read about it on a
Castle In The Sky web page. It makes sense that
some people might believe your
personality is affected by what's in your blood.
>1. Are you Male or Female?

look.

is

>there is not bloody gore violence, but there
is violence. it may not
seem like much, because of what we see everyday
on tv, but there is
enough.

between Sailors Neptune and

fmale
2. How old are you?
15

in salor moon, and the way that thy
exagerate all the emotoins and the faceul exspretions.
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
happy
6. What do you think about the roles of
women in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
well they have no mucuil tone at all, and are kinda bimbos. but in
secrit they are "super-heros". they are not aalwed
to let any one know that
they are realy very strong.
7. What do you think about the roles of
men in Sailor Moon?
men are portraed like a prince in shining armor, that comes
along and saves you.
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor
Moon?
weman are chasing men in sm, they spend alot of time chasing boys
and thinking about boys.
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon
create a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you
are a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women?
Is is attainable?
all the anima charicters are very very skinny with big eyes and
LONG legs their sexy feachers are extreamly
exadruated. i know that i could
never look like that even if i wanted to .
10. How would you rate your own looks in
terms of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
well considering that they
exagerate all the nice featers i would probubly
be long leged, with big eyes and blond hair.
but if you meaif it was possibkle
to look like that then i would be hella fat and
round headed.
11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon?
well bimboish (sarena) definatly, smart sudtudying
type(amie), bossy controlling got it together
(ray), hot tmperd (lita), and
sensitive and quite (mena).
they are all boy crazy
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon
look American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything
about Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show
but I would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do
not understand)
13. How much violence is there in Sailor
Moon? Could there be less or is
it just right?
well i think that the violince in
sm is just right because, there
is not usuly any contact it is "blasted" out
of an isterment or hand twords
the enemy. of course they dont usuly miss.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon
that could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not
asked you about?
no i can not think of any
15. How do you understand the fact that
blood types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
i have heard about it but i dont know
about it or understand it.
1. Are you Male or Female?
Male
2. How old are you?
17
3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
Yes
4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
The moralistic views of "Destiny".
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
I feel like each of us have a power within
ourselves(figuratively
speaking)
6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
That is one of the reasons that I was
attracted to the show, because I
enjoy seeing women both strong and independent.
7. What do you think about the roles of men in
Sailor Moon?
Well, I would like to see Tux. Mask/Darien/...
fight more often than
he does and maybe more elaborate fighting scenes.
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
I think both men and women are equally
portrayed in the on-going
series.
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are
a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women? Is it
attainable?
I believe it does create a standard of
beauty for women to be strong
and powerful at the same time. Yes.
10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
I decline to answer that question, because
of beauty within, and if
you are basing it in that way I would say about
the same.
11. What personality traits are exemplified in
Sailor Moon?
The traits of both love and romance.
Also the traits of honor, virtue
, and dignity. Well Serena though I would
say a little of the
ditssyness.
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon
look American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything
about Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show
but I would like to explore
this
in my paper as it is something that I do
not understand)
It seems to me they see our culture as
the romantic setting, but I
could be wrong?
13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is
it just right?
I myself don't see very much violence,
but I'm a Anime fan and I do
enjoy the action and violence from those movies
too. I would also say
that if there could be a chance I would like
to see more honorable and
virtueistic fighting?
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
Yes I believe so, because there is a multi-cultural
aspect in some
episodes and even the difference in all the Sailor
Scouts...
15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
I understand that it is a very in-depth
meaning, but I don't truly get
it myself.?.?

in Sailor Moon?

Yes, but if I could get rid of my pimples it

10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
Pretty average, I'm not a perfect or anything,
gust a computer geek.
11. What personality traits are exemplified in
Sailor Moon?
I don't know what you mean, please elaborate.
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon look
American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything about
Japanese culture?
To make the show popular to americans. Japanese
think all over the shop,
give what a viewer what they need or want in
a cartoon.
13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
It's pretty pussy rated against other MANGA movies,
but I think it's
just right.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
No or yes it all depends what they're looking
for.
15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
I understand it's not their personality traits
but their horoscope
animal. (I am a Saggitarius and I also have O
type blood just like
sailor Jupiter).
1. Female
2. 13 yrs old
3. Yes, I live in the US
4. I like the way the characters are drawn, and
I like the fact that the
girls have more power and can stand up for themselves
5. I feel happy, except when tuxedo mask always
rescues Sailor Moon
6. I think mostly, they are independent, but
Sailor Moon life
practically evolves around Darien and Tuxedo
Mask!
7. I think Tuxedo Mask hangs around too much,
but otherwise, their roles
are basically minor (compared to the girls')
8. ???
9. Not really, I think beauty comes more from
the inside...
10. I don't think I am as pretty as any of them
11. I think they emphasize too much on Serena
being a crybaby...
12. I think maybe Japanese people think more
highly of the American
Culture, otherwise, the characters would all
look Japanese.
13. It's just right
14. Maybe you could ask people wether Sailor
Moon has influenced them in
any way (ie. dress, personality, etc.)
15. I don't really understand, if that's what
you mean...
>1. Are you Male or Female?
Female
>
>2. How old are you?
15
>
>3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
Yes- USA
>
>4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
Sailor Jupiter!!! Also, it's got an interesting
plot which is more than
you can say about most animated things, excluding
other anime, and other
shows. It can be very beautiful, touching,
heartwarming and funny.
Everyone can connect to at least one of the characters.
And the star is
a klutz which is always better than some charismatic
perfect superhero.
It's about love and romance and I love that.
>
>5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
Well, sometimes it's corny but generally I feel
ecstatic to have a new
SM episode to watch and I'm engrossed when I
watch it.
>
>6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
>limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as

Generally the scouts could be viewed as very
independent even though
they need Tuxedo Mask to save them at times.
Sailors Jupiter and Uranus
are very strong. Sailor Mercury is smart.
And they all save the world
which is a pretty good portrayal of women.
Serena is a little ditzy
though and sometimes you wonder at their stupidity
and corny lines. I
think to improve the show, they could get rid
of Tuxedo Mask a little
more and make the scouts even more independent.
>
>7. What do you think about the roles of men
in Sailor Moon?
Well, Darien is really cute. He is the
protector of the scouts and can
be very sweet. Generally, guys are just
there for the girls to fall in
love with or fight with and don't play a really
significant role except
to move the story along.
>
>8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
They're lovers and/or enemies and/or friends/classmates
and such.
>
>9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create

>Well, no one in the whole town has small eyes
or short, fat legs and
they seem well-developed for junior high kids
but it doesn't affect me
in any way. Just like I'm not affected
when I see models in ads. I
don't just run off and starve myself. Even
on Sailor Moon Says or
through some episodes, they try to show that
beauty comes from within.
>10. How would you rate your own looks in terms

I want to look more like Sailor Jupiter because
she's my fave.

Friendship, loyalty, trust, love, responsibility,
courage

I think that it is the ideal for Japanese people
to look the way they do
in Sailor Moon and all anime. Japanese
people are short with small eyes
while all anime people are total opposites of
Japanese people.
>
>13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?

There isn't anything that I wouldn't let a little
kid watch in SM.

Michiru's and Haruka's love for one another
>
>15. How do you understand the fact that blood

>personality traits in SM?
I know that Raye's blood type means that she
is fiery and independent or
something. i read about this somewhere
but I forgot- sorry-but hey if
you figure this out-could you tell me?
I've been trying desperately to
figure it out!
. Are you Male or Female?
Female
2. How old are you?
15
3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
yes
4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
It has adventure, romance, comedy, and drama(sometimes).
It has a little of
everything.
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
I feel like anyone would feel after watching
a good show. Most of the time,
the plots are full of humor, so I'm usually in
a silly mood afterword.
6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
As a whole, the women would do anything for each
other. But, independantly,
they all vary in character. Sailor Moon is a
ditz and usually dependant on her
friends or Tuxedo Mask to bail her out. Sailor
Mars is one of the strong and
independant ones. Mercury is a braniac who never
gives herself a break and
Jupiter is the kind of person who beats up anyone
who gets in her friends'
way. And Venus is...neutral.
7. What do you think about the roles of men in
Sailor Moon?
Pretty much typical. They're always around to
help the girls when they're in
distress.
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
They relate to each other like normal teenagers
do...they develope huge
crushes before settling for friendship.
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are
a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women? Is is
attainable?
Not really. I'm not interested in wearing meatballs
on my head and their
costumes are so...well...I wouldn't exactly wear
them anytime soon. But, I am
thinking about putting in a purple tint to my
hair like Sailor Mars does for
Halloween.
10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
How can I rate real beauty to THEM? They're cartoons!
Sure they're pretty,
but, I don't think I'd have surgery done to get
my eyes to look as huge as
theirs. Also, think about: they don't have lips.
11. What personality traits are exemplified in
Sailor Moon?
Loyalty and inner strength.
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon look
American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything about
Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show but I
would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do not
understand)
Oh! Well, most Asian anime want their characters
to be interesting. If you
look closely, they don't have only blond hair
and blue eyes, but blue hair,
purple hair, and even pink hair, too. I don't
see any white people walking
around with naturally blue hair! Asian animators
want creativity and not
cookie-cutter characters. To most people who
aren't Oriental, Asians all look
the same to them. Yellow skin, slanted eyes,
and black hair. If all the
characters had black hair and eyes, to others,
they might look like the same
person. They create different hair styles with
all kinds of colors because it
helps us distinguish one character from another.
13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is
it just right?
I don't think there is enough. I don't mean like
I wnat blood or anything, but
the American version is so innocent! Sure, it's
a cartoon! But, in Japan the
show is meant for teenagers. Their jokes are
sometimes not-so-innocent but
when they're dubbed over in English, they might
say:"Oh, I think studying is
more important" instead of, "Oh, Mamuro-san's
my boyfriend!" (A five-year old
girl is fighting with a 15 year old over who
is really Darien's girlfriend.) I
also think that we could handle more sophisticated
humor--I mean, we have
South Park, don't we?
If you look closely, in one episode, when Serena
trips, Grandpa tries to look
up her skirt. Instead of saying: "Usagi, you
wouldn'tmind working for ME,
would you?" he says, "Are you all right?" Even
though you can see that he's
blushing.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about?
....I can't think of any right now...
15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
In Japan, blood-types are like zodiac signs
are to us. They ask for your
blood-type instead of your sign. (ex.: Having
AB-blood means that you are a
very studious person who works hard to obtain
a goal.)
1. Female
2. 10
3. Yes
4. It's funny.
6. It's ok.
10. On a scale of 1 (ugly) to 10 (pretty), I'd
say about 5.
11. For example, Mars is a indepedent one and
a determined one. Moon
is a sort of wimpy one ^_^.
12. I don't really know.
13. i think it's just right since most of the
battle scenes are short
and it's usually funny not scary.
1) I'm female
2) I'm 14 (almost 15)
3) Yes, I live in North America
4) The fact that it has girls as the main characters.
Darrien (need I say
more?), and that it shows the culture of another
country.
5) I feel happy and energetic.
6)I think that the roles of women are strong
and very able to do a great
number of stuff.
7)I think that the roles of the men are somewhat
submissive and willing to
let the girls in on most, if not all, of the
dirty work.
8) There's a lot of silly crushes, but that reflects
real life. Sailor Moon
shows little kids what type of behavior is appropriate
for the adults to do,
and it shows that it's ok to be gay (or at least
over in Japan)
9) Yes it does set a standard. Yes, I think that
it's attainable because
they're not the super thin super model, but they
look after their bodies.
10) I think that I'm right up with them because
I'm not the super thin, but
I look after myself.
11) None, all the personality traits are include.
12) Sorry to say this, but they're not all Japanese
and the Japanese like
the North American culture. (Why, I don't know.)
13) There's not an extreme amount and most of
it is unrealistic (even to
little kids)
14) Sailor Moon teaches a lot of stuff to teens,
like how to eat properly
and to be happy with yourself.
15) I understand the link because through the
research I've done on Sailor
Moon I've come to know that this is part of the
Japanese culture. (and it
just might be true)
1. Are you Male or Female?
I am female
2. How old are you? I'm
16
3. Do you live in North America?
YEP!
4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
The drawings, and
the emotions...plot, alot about it...
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
sometimes I feel like
I can relate to them, other times It seems like
I can feel their
emotions...
6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
I think the woman play a role
as being very strong, and maybe not always independent,
but they have a
friendship that will last them forever, that
is very strong. It seems
as though they might symbolize something, I'm
not sure what, but mabe
I'm seeing something where noting is meant.
7. What do you think about the roles of men in
Sailor Moon? You
don't really need them except for distractions,
helping you win
something or lose...
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
Could you be
specific???
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable?
Not really...I think that they
are drawn beautiful to attract the viewers, but
really, I think what it
might mean is not their physical beauty, ut their
inner self showing
through.
10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in
Sailor Moon? I'm not
quite sure...*smile*
11. What personality traits are exemplified in
Sailor Moon? What???
Could you rephrase that??
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon look
American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything about
Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show but I
would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do not
understand) I'm not
really sure...that is a point I also want to
find out..when you have the
question, will you please e-mail me to tell me???
13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is
it just right? There
really isn't much violence, considering that
the world now-a-days is muchmore violent.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that
could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not asked
you about? I'd like to
know exactly why it attracts so many people...old
and young...
15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
I never really checked out that point.
1. Are you Male or Female?
Female
2. How old are you?
14
3. Do you live in North America? If not,
what continent?
Yes.
4. What do you like about the show Sailor
Moon?
I like Sailor Moon a lot. It isn't very steriotipical, and the plot
is sometimes better than the action. Overall,
I like it because it's cute,
feminine, and the artist (Naoko Takeuchi) is
a very creative person.
5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor
Moon?
Sometimes I'm happy, like when Darien gets his memories back. But
sometimes it's sad, like when Darien breaks up
with Serena because he's having
visions of the future.
6. What do you think about the roles of
women in Sailor Moon? (don't
limit yourself to this point but for example
are the women portrayed as
strong and independent or submissive)
I think the women are portrayed differently. As I said before, the
anime is not steriotipical, and doesn't rely
on the public's view. The women's
personalities in the story range from hot-headed
Rei, to Macho Lita, to
Brainiac Ami, to show-model Mina, and then, of
course!, scardy-cat Serena.
7. What do you think about the roles of
men in Sailor Moon?
The
roles of men are great! Without the guys in there, how could you
have a show about junior high girls?! Besides,
they love to twist the plot.
8. How do men and women relate in Sailor
Moon?
Most of the men are friends, or mean people who become friends (i.e.
Nephrite and Darien). In some cases it's not
between guy and girl, but girl
and girl. This seems to make for controversy;
as in Haruka and Michi. I,
personally, am okay if they have a relationship,
or if they're just close
friends. My guess is most people don't approve
of this, 'course, what do they
say to the R Movie?
9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon
create a standard for your own
beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you
are a guy, does Sailor Moon
create a standard of beauty for women?
Is is attainable?
Sailor
Moon and the scouts' beauty doesn't bother me. Since most
people into anime are guys, the show's made to
be that way. Also, Naoko
Takeuchi's mangas are like that : long legs,
cleavage, and skimpy outfits.
10. How would you rate your own looks in
terms of the characters in
Sailor Moon?
If
Sailor Moon were a ten, I'd rate myself at about an 8, most 'cause
she can change her looks with the Lunar Pen.
11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon?
Snobby,
innocent, bully-like, clutzy, air-headish, egostatistical,
dangerous, and caring.
12. Why do the Characters in Sailor Moon
look American when they were
created in Japan? Does this say anything
about Japanese culture? (This
is not meant as a criticism of the show
but I would like to explore this
in my paper as it is something that I do
not understand)
I
don't believe the characters are limited to one ethnic code. All
anime isn't held by one ethnic code or another;
rather, if people in Anime
looked Japanese or Korean or Russian or whatever
, nobody would buy it 'cause
it didn't exactly relate to them. I think people
enjoy watching a show that
has no racial background.
13. How much violence is there in Sailor
Moon? Could there be less or is
it just right?
Counting
I'm a *major* Akira fan, and hope to one day see "Night
Scrolls", the violence in Sailor Moon is *quite*
minimum. I've only seen the
dubs, but even what I've read of the rest of
the series is light in contrast
to other anime be produced.
14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon
that could be of interest to a
paper on youth culture that I have not
asked you about?
I
don't know. Maybe you could ask if the show prompts, or influences,
people to do things (good and bad)?
15. How do you understand the fact that
blood types are linked to
personality traits in SM?
That Noako Takeuchi made the characters for their specific planets,
which have specific astrological signs, which
go hand-in-hand with their blood
type. I don't remember really well, but, like
type O blood means this, and
type B blood is that...it's quite complicated.
16. What do you know about Sailors Neptune
and Uranus?
Such a delicate question, eh? Well, Sailors Uranus and Neptune
(Haruka and Michiru, Erika and Michelle) are
two sailors (in S) looking for
sacred talesmans that will from the holy grail.
About their
relationship...well, it's left up to the audience
to decide, but I believe
they are together.
1. Are you Male or Female?
> female
> 2. How old are you?
> 15 years old
> 3. Do you live in North America? If not, what
continent?
> Yes, I live in N. America.
> 4. What do you like about the show Sailor Moon?
> I think it can be really funny
and cute and the story gets a bit addicting
after watching for a while. I first watched
it because I thought it a little
romantic too. :)
> 5. How do you feel when you watch Sailor Moon?
> ummm...happy/having a good time
I guess. If my answer isn't good, be a
little more specific.
> 6. What do you think about the roles of women
in Sailor Moon? (don't limit
yourself to this point but for example are the

> Serena is made to act like a stereotypical
teenage girl who's a little wimpy
and loves shopping. Molly seems to be really
submissive being a victim all the
time. However, Scouts do something about anything
that's bothering them so women
are tough when pushed to a certain extent, which
is nice to know. not too great
portrayal though.
> 7. What do you think about the roles of men
in Sailor Moon? Hee hee, like
Naoko kinda said on the SAVE the Sailor Scouts
website, men are there but don't
depend on them. Still, aren't they fun?
:o>
>
> 8. How do men and women relate in Sailor Moon?
> hmmmm...they
get crushes on each other, but it's quite a more serious
case than that too...it's hard to say there's
a true, deep relationship between
the sexes(not yet, anyway)
> 9. If you are a girl, does Sailor Moon create
a standard for your own
> beauty? If yes is that attainable? If you are
a guy, does Sailor Moon
> create a standard of beauty for women? Is is
attainable? Not realistically.
I like to try to draw characters as a kinda beautiful
shoujo picture, but I
build my beauty standards on different people.
If she was my standard, I don't
think it's attainable and it it was attainable,
the person wouldn't look as good
anyways.
>
> 10. How would you rate your own looks in terms
of the characters in Sailor
Moon?
> Oh dear. The scouts
are pretty impressive, but I'd rate myself around
Molly and Sailor Mercury, 'cause both have a
quiet beauty and cuteness that
really shows through during special moments.
> 11. What personality traits are exemplified
in Sailor Moon? i think
exemplified means shown as good...loyalty to
friends and family, friendship,
having good intentions (like not sucking energy
and stuff -_-;), being sensitive
and caring...
>

> I wondered about that too.
But if you look at some Japanese anime, the
characters are many times Caucasian. There are
blonds, brunettes, redheads, etc.
in Robotech and other stuff...Maybe the Japanese
have a standard of beauty that
likes Caucasian looks...
> 13. How much violence is there in Sailor Moon?
Could there be less or is it
just right? Well, the American version
definitely all right. I imagine the
japanese has much more. Japanese manga
tends to go into gritty issues like
suicide and stuff and America would edit that
stuff out once it comes overseas
for the general public.
>
> 14. Are there any aspects of Sailor Moon that

you about? Shamanism?
Fascination with Romance, magic, special powers,
people from other planets?
>
> 15. How do you understand the fact that blood
types are linked to personality
traits in SM? the blood types linked to
the zodiac and the horoscope, and so
linked to the Sailor Scouts and their planet
signs. Each of their signs (and
b-days) have certain traits, preferences, futures
attributed to them. Lots of
SM pages have this type of info, down to what
animals SM likes, what foods she
loves and hates, etc. etc.
> Sorry I answered so late, but I was on
a class trip. The survey was
interesting. BYe!
How is the lesbian relationship portrayed(positively
or negatively)?
> so far I think they've all been rather interesting,
but mostly
postive...
>Is it obvious that the characters are lesbians?
> In some cases, they are... In the Japanese
version, Zoicite is
actually a guy... and 2 male villans fall for
Mamoru in a way, Fisheye
dresses up as a girl to flirt with him while
Fiore just outright carries
him off. But with Haruka and Michiru, Sailor
Uranus and Neptune, thier
relationship isn't as clear
>Do the lesbians exemplify the common stereotype
(masculine, butch,
>etc...) or break it.
> I'd say that it breaks it, because none of
the couples are butch
material, (black leather, musclebound, stainless
steel spikes?) but some
of the guys are quite feminine while Haruka is
often mistaken for a guy
>Would most people who watch the show know that
the characters were
>lesbians?
> probably, except dic keeps messing it all up
in the dub...
>How do the other characters relate to them with
regard to their sexual
>orientation?
> I don't really know about Fisheye, but the
Inner Senshi still kindof
like to flirt with Haruka even after learning
that she's a girl, and
Zoicite didn't have too much contact with normal
life, I'd say that the
other characters accepted it as pretty normal...
*s* I'm just glad to help out in any way! If it
isn't too much of a
bother, could I take a peek at your report when
it's done? sounds
interesting....
>
>Thanks for answering my questions. If it's not
too much trouble could
>you answer a couple more? My course deals a
lot with homosexuality and
I
>would really like to learn more about the lesbian
characters. I was not
>aware of this when I sent out the questionnaire.
>
>How do you find out that the Characters are
lesbians? I found out from
going to various websites and the comic books
>
>How do the other Characters relate to them in
terms of their sexual
>orientation (what do the other characters think)?
well one of the
lesbians dresses like a guy so serena and mina(sailor
moon &
venus)thought it was a guy and had a big crush
on her. When they found
out that he was a she they were a little embaressed
but they lived with
it and have no problem with it at all.
>
>Is their sexual orientation portrayed in a negative
or a positive
light? no, the subject doesn't really come up
in the show. and there are
no negative remarks made about either of them
or about homosexuality.
>
>Is there sexual orientation obvious i.e. would
any person watching the
>show realise this? they kiss sometimes but really
nothing more, most
people if they watch the Japanesse version(they
don't air the episodes
w/the lesbians in the U.S. dub)and they see the
two lesbians in their
school fuku(uniforms)then they would just think
that they were a couple
because Uranus dresses like a guy most of the
time and wears the guys
school fuku(uniform)
Yes, I do know about the two characters in question.
They are
Haruka/SailorUranus and Michiru/SailorNeptune.
They have not yet
appeared in the English version and I doubt they
ever will. It is not
stated that they are lesbians, but their relationship
is very obvious.
They other characters find their relationship
shoking at first,
especially since Haruka/SailorUranus is also
a cross-dresser, but they
do ajust to it. Their relationship is portrayed
in a neutral light, I
guess. The show does not try to hide their relationship,
nor does it
promote this sexual orientation. The way they
act with each other is the
only way to tell that they are lesbians. They
occasionaly act like
lovers, making little comments to each other
that implies a deeper
relationship than friendship. Also, they once
entered a "Declare your
Love" contest together. (Episode 95, Japanese
version) They are never
shown kissing, but sometimes shown holding hands
or holding each other.
I can't really answer your question about stereotypes
because I don't
know any stereotypes about lesbians. Personnally,
I see nothing wrong
with this type of relationship. I also don't
think that it makes any
difference in regards to the charecters themselves.
They are still very
cool sailors. I hope this information will be
usefull to you.
<< If you have it might help my project
if you tell me whether you knew
that two of the characters are lesbians
and a little bit about how the
other characters see their relationship
and how they are portrayed >>
Yes, I know that Neptune and Uranus are lesbians
and Malachite and Zoicite
were supposed to be gay. I think Sailormoon gives
a very fair representation
of Neptune and Uranus's relationship...it is
one of the most romantic in the
show. The other characters are a bit surprised
at first because they thought
Uranus was a man, but then they seem to accept
it, and eventually they are all
touched by the closeness of the women's relationship.
In short, I kinda like
it. ^_^ It makes the show a better representation
of the world...'s back to
what I said about there being a character for
everyone to identify with. It
makes the characters more balanced.
