Planting Daisies By The Iron Gate
Five years old
in a pink dress of lace
take a picture of it
innocence on her face
she liked to dig holes
and plant daisy seeds
first thing in the morning
run out to cut the weeds
with her little round-end scissors
and water with her pail
pick those flowers at the time
on the table till stale.
Five years older
planting daisies by the iron gate
to have decoration for mother
who didn't have to wait
every day a daisy
blooming up for her to pick
to lay atop the grass there
by the slab of marble thick.
Twenty years older
it could only be fate
her children dig holes
planting daisies by the iron gate
the gate that stands
through the deterioration by age
as those daisies are planted
there amidst the rage
of living and dying
cycles of the earth
more daisy seeds go under
symbolizing a certain birth
then turned brown and fade
into the grass which is where
bones become dirt but the iron gate
still it stands there.
