More than Just a Weekend at Boy Scout Camp

by Andy Woodmansee, LTG 11N&S

Hey y'all, Just writing about my trainer.....it was great!!!! Went over very well!!!! It was more than just a weekend at a boy scout camp, it was a weekend of harsh, rugged climbing! Okay, friday night we got there, and were outside doing icebreakers.....looked like rain so our instructor (Roscoe at the time) looked at his beeper and got the weather from cleveland. He said "Oh, it wont be here for another 30 minutes!" What do ya know, 5 minutes later, we're inside and it's pouring down rain. No one was drenched, because we got in right before it started to rain. The storm knowcked out the power for about 3 hours, so I gave my part of the weekend in the dark. Fun actually...oh during the downpour (which lasted about 10 minutes) we did "Singing in the rain" in the rain. I led everyone in my version. (Words are the same, you just add movement!!) Okay, after the storm, we went to the mess hall and made our dinner. One person in a group of 3 was blindfolded and was the only one who could make the other's sandwiches!! Of course, I was the one who got blindfolded in my group. Suffice it to say that mayo, pickles and ketchup are not anything that I will every again touch while blind!! Okay, after that fiasco...... itīs about 9pm and we are taught how to put on the harnesses (none of the guys in attendace will ever be able to have kids...ever!!). These were needed for Saturday! We also learned how to repel down and how to bal`ey someone. Went to bed in our cabins (wire bunkbeds, and sponge mattresses aren't always comfy!!!) and played cards till 3am. Okay, got up at 7am saturday...and had a great breakfast in the mess hall (no we werent blindfolded this time......God only knows what would happen with syrup and knives in my presence!!!). There are 2 courses a high one and a low one. Everybody there went thru both courses. Low first...basically games to build trust. High course is what the harnesses are for. Imagine this, you're suspended 40ft. up in the air on high tension wires that are on telephone poles..the only way down, is a 120ft. zipcord. Quite fun if I do say so myself!!! That night we just talked with our new instructors (Matt and Kevin who took over halfway thru friday night cuz roscoe had to go home to his woman) about the course and how that ties in with key club and leadership in general. We also had a dance/ free time thing that night too. We got Kim and Kevin hooked up......thats right, a 16 yr old Key Clubber...and our 17 yr. old instructor. That was easy actually....people should just be blunt when it comes to who they like! Sunday, we make up a skit on what we did during the weekend, and write letters to ourselves that will be sent to us in 6 months. Then ate lunch and went home. Very enjoyable weekend I must say...the board might want to look into doing something like that in the future!! Bye!!

Andy
