Green Party Announces Candidacy

(RLN, Feb. 18)

Robin Barrett of Redondo Beach announced her intent to run for the 36th congressional district seat as a Green party representative this past weekend at an Angels Gate Park meeting. Her platform consists primarily of traditional Green 'values', including ecology, nonviolence, and electoral reform, with particular emphasis on shifting representative strategies in government. Barrett pointed out in her speech that in most other democracies worldwide, a plurality of voices from alternative parties are represented in government according to percentage-wise vote accumulation, as opposed to the all-or-nothing approach in the United States. Her candidacy was particularly inspired by the fact that Democratic incumbent Jane Harman's office made a call to the local Green clearinghouse discouraging them from offering a candidate in the race. "What an insult to democracy!", said Barrett, "We need to broaden the range of voices being heard out there, not narrow it."
