INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF SPAIN

Portfolio

Due:  Final Day of Regular Classes for the Spring Semester, 2007-2008.

DO NOT be late.  Your have had all semester to work on this project.

Format:  1/2-inch, 3-ring binder (NOT a 1 inch or larger binder)

Any portfolio not submitted in this format will be rejected.  (One exception:  if you have collected more stories and/or documents than can possibly fit in the 1/2 binder.)

Contents:

(a)  Typed list of 5 questions on Spanish history/culture, a copy of which is to be handed in on the Wednesday of the second week of class.

(b) 15 stories or documents of interest concerning Spain, its history, or its culture that the student has found and read.  (This is an average of roughly one item for each week of the course.)

At least one half of these stories or documents (8) must deal with historical topics covered in the class.

At least one third of these stories or documents (5) must come from sources other than the web.

For purposes of definition, a story from the New York Times or other periodical archive that is accessible through the web, but which originally appeared originally in print, is not considered to be a web source.  Hence, it is acceptable as one of the 5 non-web documents.

You do not have to write any commentary on the stories in question.  However, if you feel the urge to comment please feel free to do so.  It can only count in your favor.

(c)  A final research paper on some topic in Spanish history that the student wishes to pursue in greater depth must be handed in with the portfolio.

The student should clear the paper topic no later than the seventh week of class.

At that time, he/she should hand to the professor a typed sheet of paper with containing his/her name and a brief explanation of the topic.  At this time, the professor must agree that the topic is appropriate and do-able.
