Much remains to be done, especially in placing San Diego's career and eventual canonization into a wider historical perspective.  In particular, I am looking for such sources as the following:

* any contemporary documents or chronicles which refer to the life or (more likely) the death of San Diego

* any references to the canonization process (1562-1588) which appear in late sixteenth century sources

* descriptions of the canonization ceremonies held in Rome in July, 1588

* reactions from either Catholics or Protestants to this particular canonization

* information concerning relations between Philip II and the Holy See which might help explain why the canonization proceedings ground to a halt in the late 1560s, not to resume until the elevation of Sixtus V in 1585 (or, to put it another way, why did Pius V and Gregory XIII drag their heels on making Diego a saint?)

* libraries, archives, collections where I might profitably look for answers to such questions (in short, any bibliographical references which might prove valuable)
