The library wants everyone to have the opportunity to discover the wealth of materials that is available on the Internet. This brochure is to help young people explore the web and to help parents learn with them. Children and teenagers need parental supervision and common sense advice to help make their experiences in "cyberspace" happy, healthy, and productive.
For Internet basics please see the help sheet. For books on the Internet ask a librarian or check the catalog in title keyword "Internet" or "Netscape". The Library of Congress, will direct you to tutorials. An excellent article to read is' "Child Safety on the Information Superhighway". The Magazine Family PC has guidelines for Internet users of all ages. Please visit Carolyn Caywood of ACIC's "Guiding Children Through Cyberspace"
The Internet Relay Chat and e-mail are not in use at Oxnard Public Libraries.

I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.
I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
I will not respond to messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the online service.
I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parent's work address or telephone number, of the name and location of my school without my parent's permission.
I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.
