PVC Darts and Javelins

Missle Construction Notes

Javelin length is 42" to 66"

Dart length is 24" to 42"

These missles are constructed from schedule 40 3/4" PVC as labeled on the pipe. Maximum weight for a javelin is 1.5 pounds and a dart is 1 pound, if they are intended for use in seige engines.

Head Construction of both javelins and darts:

The head consist of two wraps of 1/2" closed cell foam (insulite pad) created from one 5"x6" rectangle and a 7.5"x6" rectangle, constructing a tube 6 inches long. The same material is to be rolled to match the diameter of the capped shaft and 3 inches in length. This roll is placed inside, in front of the shaft. The head is then capped with 1/2 of a Tennis ball and taped in place. The back of the head is taped with electrical tape to form a compressed cone just behind the head of the shaft, anchoring the head to the shaft. This also provides a base the diameter of the tennis ball that will absorb impact using *all* of the foam in the head, not just the small piece stuffed in front of the shaft. My experience has shown that anything else is a waste of material and has no useful results. The half tennis ball gives the head a constant and consistant diameter and protects the head from damage on impact. The finished result resembles a Q-tip. Diagrams of this head and of a fin pattern are available from me in PCX or BMP file formats.
