Forward to the Third Edition:
The Combat Handbook of the Kingdom of Caid is a compilation of the Conventions and Standards used by Caid
since its inception as a Kingdom and those Rules, Conventions and Standards put forth by the Society for
Creative Anachronism, Inc. The Standards, Conventions and Rules listed herein will become effective and
enforceable upon the publication of this Handbook.
Any observations about the Handbook should be directed, in writing, to the Kingdom Earl Marshal for consideration or comment. Please note that although this Handbook may not be perfect, any "faults" found with the Rules of the Lists, Standards or limitations may prove exceptionally difficult to change as many of these rulings are from Corporate and thus can only be changed by the Society Marshal.
My thanks for assistance in the preparation of this Handbook go to the following:
All the Earl Marshals who have preceded me and put into written and printed word the function of the Marshalate over the course of the SCA's twenty five year life.
All the Marshals and fighters that had input to this work.
Sir Robear du Bois and Sir Einar aus Enwalt for previous editions of the handbook - I know only too well how much work it was.
Notes on organization
In the review copy of the second edition of the handbook, Sir Einar had placed the Marshal's material in the rear
of the handbook. I (among others, I hope) convinced him that the "Marshal's Handbook" should have the
marshalate materials in the front. I have since come to the conclusion that Sir Einar was correct in his first
production and this handbook contains the weapons and fighting materials in the front and the Marshal's
materials in the rear. As I would like this handbook to become a common item among all fighters, not simply
Marshals, it has been renamed the "Combat Handbook of Caid "to emphasize its appropriateness to all fighters.
