Parliamentary Procedure Q&A

Q: I am the president of a small r/c club (model planes). Is it legal to have a walking meeting to rescind a motion that was made at a previous meeting? The person who made the motion is the person who wanted to rescind the motion. It had to do with how many meetings we would have each month. We run a club that is for fun and we try to stay loose for that reason. He said we had to call a regular meeting at our club outing. I just polled the members while they were on the flight line. We don't have a regular meeting at our outings. - Charles M. Phillips, Jan. 31, 2000

A: I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a "walking meeting," but I assume you mean the poll you took "on the flight line." No, a poll is not a vote even if every member polled says "My vote is to ...."

One thing you could consider: It may be that the original decision was out of order. Check your bylaws. If they specify how often the club meets, a regular vote to meet otherwise - without amending your bylaws - is out of order; its effect is null and void.
