WHAT IS 'SG DE MONNIKSKAP'?
'SG de Monnikskap' is a school for secondary education for children who are physically disabled to such an extent that they require more help in their development and education than ordinary secondary schools can offer.
The school is situated on the grounds of the St Maartens-clinic and is intended, amongst others,
for pupils:
AIMS
To provide education to young people who are physically disabled. Pupils can attend two-year junior secondary vocational education (LBO), which creates the possibility of further vocational education or apprenticeship training elsewhere.
Alternatively, pupils can attend junior or senior general secondary education (MAVO, HAVO), or pre-university education (VWO), possibly to be completed wit the certificates belonging to these types of education.
VWO: pre-university education for those who may wish to go on to university or higher vocational education.
HAVO: senior secondary education for those who may wish to go on to senior secondary or higher vocational education.
MAVO: senior general secondary education for those who may wish to go on to senior secondary vocational education.
ADMISSION
Admission is decided upon by a committee consisting of the head of the school, a rehabilitation physician, a psychologist, and a welfare worker. Advice is also sought from the school last attended by the pupil. Some pupils may be placed temporarily in an observation group, during which time a clear view is developed on admittance to a school type or level. This may be necessary after an accident or illness.
HOUSING
The school has a national as well as a regional function. It is the only school in the Netherlands which includes higher forms of HAVO and VWO for the physically disabled. This means that pupils visit the school from:
ASSISTANCE
In principle, instruction is given in groups, but since the groups are very small 6 pupils on average ample individual assistance can be given. Pupils can also obtain medical and/or psychological/social assistance from experts resident at the St Maartens-clinic. Therapy is as much as possible fitted into the timetable. In choosing a profession or further education, pupils are assisted by the careers teacher. The more the pupil is incapacitated by his or her handicap, the more important this help becomes.
