View Populus alba
The poplar referred to in the verses below is found in the hill country near and in Jerusalem. It grows to between 30 and 60 feet. It also thrives in wet places in Syria. Hosea records: "They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good..."
It is a fast-growing tree, especially while young. It produces long straight shoots and green leaves that are backed with white. The flowers are in the form of catkins and appear before the leaves. The buds are covered with a resinous varnish. They give out a balsamic odor when burned.
