Description: This course is a survey of political, social, economic and intellectual issues of American history from the early settlements the era Civil War Reconstruction to the late 20th century.
Introduction: The history of the United States is rich and fascinating. In this course, we will examine that history from the end of the Civil War through the late 20th century using a wide variety of secondary and primary sources. Class requirements include regular attendance, active participation and diligent research.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the semester, successful students will be able to:
- Define and express the meanings and applications of history;
- Know and understand the major facts and concepts of United States history from Civil War Reconstruction to the late 20th century;
- Recognize and analyze secondary and primary sources;
- Write effective essays and analytical papers on American history;
- conduct basic historical research;
- develop effective procrastination techniques;
- evaluate and understand the subjective nature of history;
- compare and contrast relevant historical and contemporary events and ideas;
- participate in specific and general discussions related to early American history; and
- understand Internet applications for history.
