A game for two or more players, each of whom attempts to make as many words as
possible containing at least four letters. The game can be made more difficult by
increasing the minimum number of letters in each word.
RULES
1. Place all the pieces face downwards in the middle of a flat surface.
2. Each player in turn reveals one of the pieces until a player can construct a word
from the displayed letters. He/she shouts out his word and then displays it in front of
him. If an anagram can be made of the entire word, any player should shout out the
new word thereby ‘SWIPING’ it. If the player who made the original word sees the
anagram he or she must shout it out before ayone else to be sure of retaining the word,
i.e. READ -- could become DARE or DEAR.
3. The game then continues with the player who made the final word turning up a
piece, continuing either to make new words or adding to the ones already created, i.e.
DEAR could become DREAM which in turn could become MARRED and then
MARRIED. Each time a word is lengthened or altered the basic meaning must change:
no plurals or different tenses are allowed. All the letters of a word must be used before
it is made into an anagram or lengthened.
4. If two players shout out a word simultaneously -- neither benefits and the word is
void for the rest of the game. The existence, spelling or meaning of any word may be
challenged -- if it is incorrect the player who shouted out the word may not later use it if
the correct letters should appear. As well as challenging a word, any player may require
another to nominate all possible meanings of the word. If the challenger knows a
meaning which is not nominated he then ‘SWIPES’ the word.
5. The game continues until all the pieces are revealed. The player who turns up the
last piece decides when the game should end.
6. Scoring is calculated by each player adding up the figures on the letters in front of
him -- the highest score wins. An extra 10 points is awarded for each word containing 8
letters or more. And extra 15 points to any player who constructs the word ‘SWIPE’ --
which cannot be changed or ‘SWIPED’. The use of a dictionary will help avoid
arguments.
‘SWIPE’ can also be played with two or more sets of the game.
