Carte de Visite

This tintype, shown actual size, was taken at the 1996 Oatlands Event near Leesburg, Virginia, courtesy of Claude Levett, historical photographer. Rendered on metal plate by direct printing.
(clockwise from top left: Randy "lil-make" Haymaker, Bob Denton, Chris A. Graham, and Travis Haymaker)

A paper print rendering of a glass plate ambrotype, this photograph was taken at Pioneer Village Living History Museum, Pioneer, Arizona, Veteran's Day 1996. Travis and Bob are portraying members of the Texas Expeditionary Force to the southwest under Sibley.  This was the Confederacy's unsuccessful bid to assimilate New Mexico and Arizona, thus gaining control of the mineral wealth  which was only beginning to be revealed there at the time.  The Confederate forces gained a brief victory at the battle of Valverde, only to be defeated and thrown back shortly thereafter at the Battle of Glorieta Pass, both in the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico, south of Albuquerque.

Finally, in this photograph, a paper copy of a small glass plate ambrotype, shown at actual size.  (from left) Shawn Harris, Travis and Randy are portraying artillerists, in the early part of the war.  Randy is garbed in a civilian sack coat, while the other boys are shown in commutation uniforms (tailor-made), precursors to the style which we now refer to as the "Richmond Depot Type I" (after Jensen).
