My natural inclination at times is to try and do more, to 'work harder' at my Christianity. More prayer, Bible study, evangelism etc.. but there is really nothing I can do that pleases God... it always comes down to heart. God cares about the heart. All the thing I mentioned are very good things in and of themselves but doing more things is not the way to draw closer to the heart of God... he very simply wants us to be deeply affected by sin, our own and others. To hurt over the condition of the world and to be humble and subdued as a result.. to tremble at his word - to revere it - to hold it in high honor and esteem... how? by loving and obeying it. When that is my mindset I do many more things but my heart is different about it.. I do them because I love God and want to give back.
