Clear Channel is a radio network based in the United States which controls some 10% of all radio stations in the country. Yesterday, they released a list of songs with "questionable" lyrics. The list can be viewed at ABC. In case you don't want to click on my link, I'll provide a few highlights.

Satchmo's timeless recording of What a Wonderful World. The most questionable lyrics in that song? "What a Wonderful World". Or maybe "The colours of rainbows so pretty in the sky". Not sure which one. Clearly subversive and possibly creating catatonic responses all over America.

What about Imagine? The most questionable lyrics in that song I would guess are "Imagine there's no heaven....imagine there's no country....And no religion too". However, Mr. Lennon is not talking about worldwide apcolypse. he's talking worldwide PEACE. Or perhaps worldwide peace is what this radio network is trying to avoid. I mean, we want to incite the American peoples to war don't we?

Bobby Darin's rendition of Mack the Knife. That's another thing, why only Bobby Darin? Why only Armstrong's version of What a Wonderful World? All the other versions are okay? Or what? Does Bobby Darin sing "lies a body oozin' life...Someone's sneakin' 'round the corner...could that someone be Mack the Knife?" particularly evilly?

Oh, here's a good one. Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water. Now there's a horrid song for you. Questionable lyrics? I guess "When you're down and out, when you're on the street". But the next line is "I will comfort you". The fucking song is about friends helping friends. Is that something that they're trying to discourage, or what?

Well, that's enough of that. You can check the list yourself for more "questionable" songs. The trend seems to be......get rid of some of the stuff that glorifies New York, get rid of some of the stuff that glorifies other American metropolitan cities, get rid of some of the songs about airplanes, get rid of some of the songs that glorify America, get rid of some of the songs about violence, get rid of some of the songs about crashes, and get rid of some of the songs about friendship and beauty. Basically a random list of songs. What's the intent behind it? I guess the feeling is that America is so depressed that playing these songs on the radio will just put them over the edge, is that it? Or perhaps there are political purposes? Priming the country for war? Helping the rebuilding effort? I don't know. But I suspect that the primary reason is to not make people crazy with depression.

I'm rather surprised that they would do such a thing though. Just how much do the American people have to be coddled like this? It's a clear sign of weakness, and the effect of which this attack had on America. The terrorists, reading this list are going to be pissing their pants laughing. As they should be. It means that they succeeded in every aspect of their attack. And it means that the American peoples are a people who need special treatment, who cannot face reality. Welcome to the real world. I just don't have anything more to say. Again and again, I'm disgusted by America. I'll leave you with the lyrics to Great Balls of Fire, as sung by Jerry Lee Lewis. A happy-go-lucky ditty about love....it was also deemed questionable by Clear Channel.

Great balls of fire

You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain
Too much love drives a man insane
You broke my will, oh what a thrill
Goodness gracious great balls of fire

I learned to love all of Hollywood money
You came along and you moved me honey
I changed my mind, looking fine
Goodness gracious great balls of fire

You kissed me baba, woo.....it feels good
Hold me baba, learn to let me love you like a lover should
Your fine, so kind
I'm a nervous world that your mine mine mine mine-ine

I cut my nails and I quiver my thumb
I'm really nervous but it sure is fun
Come on baba, you drive me crazy
Goodness gracious great balls of fire

Well kiss me baba, woo-oooooo....it feels good
Hold me baba
I want to love you like a lover should
Your fine, so kind
I got this world that your mine mine mine mine-ine

I cut my nails and I quiver my thumb
I'm real nervous 'cause it sure is fun
Come on baba, you drive me crazy
Goodness gracious great balls of fire

I say goodness gracious great balls of fire...oooh...
