My initial reaction was one of incredulity. What do the women need a sports channel for? They already got WTN and TLC. Well, not TLC exactly. But nobody but women watch it. So there you go. But once I got past my initial male chauvinist reaction, I didn't find the idea so strange.
Point number one. Look at what TSN shows. What do they show? The four big ones obviously. Although they don't have a contract for basketball, as far as I know. So hockey, football and baseball. They also throw in a healthy dose of fishing, golf, bowling, billiards, darts, wrestling and auto racing. Plus SportsDesk, once every two hours or something. And a few analysis/week in review type shows. Beyond that....there's nothing. A spelling bee here, skipping competition there.
How about the other channels? I see some WNBA action on NBC sometimes I think. During the Olympics, they show women sports. Figure skating. Stuff like that. Tennis maybe. Oh, that's TSN's exception to the rule. They do show some women's tennis. But anyways, there's really not much out there in terms of televising women events.
Women deserve to be recognized. They put in every bit as much work as the men, and are probably are as good at what they do as the men are. Women are always being compared to men, rather than being judged on their own terms. I see girls in junior hockey, always wanting to be on the boys' teams. Manon Rheaume or something eh? But I think that the difference should not be between the level of skill necessary, but it should be between the style of play. In football, the CFL takes tremendous pride in the way it plays its games. It's very distinct from the American style of football. Women should - and have been doing the same thing. But it needs to be more. And they need to celebrate things like this. I'm at this point, too tired to care.
