I read a headline in the sports section of the Vancouver Sun yesterday. It said "Canucks take another step back". I thought it was referring to the 6-2 loss that I just watched to the Nashville Predators. Pretty fast newspaper, thought I. Turns out they were actually talking about the 4-1 loss to Detroit the previous night. The point is, right now, the Canucks suck.

What are we going to do about it? I happen to think that this bunch of guys can pull it through. They're a tight group, they have the talent and lots of potential. They are capable of working hard. What they don't seem to have is the mental strength that allows them to focus and play with intensity for the full sixty minutes. That's (I think) the only problem right now. In many of their losses, they've outplayed and outworked the opposition for more than half the game, sometimes for all but five minutes. But those five minutes are deadly. So what's going to happen?

Well, obviously most people don't have the patience to wait out this team. They're calling for trades and pronto. Brian Burke can't ignore those people any more than he can ignore the plight of his team. There's not much doubt in my mind that before the month is out, we're going to see some more trades. It's really too bad that this group of guys couldn't pull their shit together. It was nice cheering for a team that had on it, twenty guys who you would like to be your friend. No big stars, no big egos, no bad attitudes or bad apples. But maybe, in order to be a good team, you need those guys. Damn.
