Fan Fiction

This is my first attempt at fan fiction, so please be gentle.

Summary: It's generally agreed that if either Mulder or Scully became "attached" to anyone else at this point, it would consitute a huge betrayal, whether or not they should be "together" in the romantic sense. I agree with this, but wondered what would happen if one of them did become attached, for whatever reason. This is my answer to that question.

"The Girlfriend"

Mulder was sitting at his desk when Scully walked in. He looked
up at the sound of the door opening, and grinned. "Welcome back!
I see you found your way to the new office." She grinned back
at him. "I did." Looking around, she commented "It's
so...bright. And I see I've got a nameplate now.
And...is that my own desk?" "After five years, I guess someone figured
you'd earned it." "Well, I just won't know what to do with myself."
She walked over to the new, government-issue wooden desk and began
poking around. "What's this?" She asked, picking up a stack of files.
"Oh, that's just some stuff I was working on in your absence. How
was the trip, by the way?" "Mulder, you're not allowed to spread
your disorganization to my desk. And the trip was very good.
I'm feeling better than I have in years." "Sorry.
You weren't here, so I figured you wouldn't mind." She just
looked at him, one eyebrow cocked. "You're looking
pretty chipper yourself. I take it you got along alright without me?
Last time I came back from vacation, there were pencils stuck in
the ceiling." Mulder glanced up, and suddenly began looking uncomfortable.
"I got along pretty well," he said, refusing to
meet Scully's eye. "Mulder, what aren't you telling me? Have
you had another run in with our enemies?" "No, actually it's
been pretty quiet. Look, I've got to go. I'm meeting someone
in half an hour. Oh, I may not be at home tonight, if you need
to reach me, here's a number." He grabbed a pencil and wrote
the number on a scrap of paper. Then he got up and grabbed his
coat, and left without another word. Scully looked at the
number, her eyebrow cocked in puzzlement. It wasn't like Mulder
to give her a number like that without any other explanation.
Besides, he knew she generally called his cell phone if he
wasn't at home. And that was in the unlikely event she would
need to call him. They weren't even working on a case at the
moment. At least, not together. She had been gone for a month,
after all. There was no name nor any other information on the
paper, just a number. 555-1013. Very odd, she thought. But
then, Mulder was often odd. She decided to explore the new
office. It was larger than the old basement office, and
actually had some real windows. The old filing cabinet had been
replaced, probably because it had been more or less destroyed in
the fire. In fact, the firemen had said that it seemed that the
fire had started in the filing cabinet, leading them to suspect
arson. Not that either of them had been particularly surprised
at that. She opened the top drawer, and sighed at its
sparseness. So much had been lost. There were still a few
files, those that she or Mulder had been keeping at home for one
reason or another. She noticed that there was a new file on
Samantha. She picked it up and flipped through it. No new
information, it looked like it was mainly old stuff that Mulder
had reconstructed. She put it back and began looking for new files,
which would have been added while she was gone. There
were a few, nothing spectacular. Pedestrian stuff. Apparently
it had been quiet while she was gone. As she went over to her
desk, her thoughts turned back to the number Mulder had given
her, and his actions right before he walked out. It almost
seemed like he wanted her to call the number, like he was hiding
something and this number was a way to clue her in to something
without actually telling her anything. She wondered if he
suspected the new place of being under surveillance.

Eventually, with nothing left to do, she went home. She
hadn't really unpacked yet, so she decided to go ahead and get
it out of the way. As she put clothes back in her closet, she
was still pondering Mulder's odd actions. Finally she decided
to call the number and see what happened. She picked up the
phone and dialed. The phone rang once, twice, and then was
picked up. "Hello?" said a female voice. Startled, Scully
said, "Oh. I was, uh...I'm trying to reach Agent Fox Mulder.
Is he there?" "Just a minute," the voice replied. Then, in the
background, the same voice, "Honey, it's for you!" Honey?
Thought Scully. Then Mulder's voice was on the line. "This is
Agent Mulder." Suddenly, Scully didn't know what to say. She
had thought of a pretext for calling, but now it seemed silly.
Flustered, she hung up the phone without responding. She just
stood there for a moment, unsure how to react. Then she got
angry. How dare he? She thought, seething. If he's got a
girlfriend, he could've just told me. He didn't have to act all
infantile about it. We should be past these silly little games
by now. Doesn't he trust me? It's not like I have any romantic
claim on him; it's not like we're anything but partners. She
wanted to throw something, preferably at him. Finally, she
flung herself down on her bed. Lying there, she was surprised
to feel her eyes getting watery. Shit, she thought. Why am I crying?
She didn't know, didn't want to know, didn't want to examine the
situation too closely. Finally she drifted into a
fitful sleep.

There was something wrong. A noise. Pounding. Slowly, Scully
struggled into wakefulness. Someone was pounding on her door.
She glanced at the clock. Three am. She got up and pulled on
a robe, and walked into the front room. She peered through the
peephole, more to see the expression on Mulder's face than to
ascertain who it was. Who else would be at her door at 3
o'clock in the morning? He looked disturbed. She opened the
door. "Sorry to wake you, Scully. Are you alright?" Scully
realized her eyes must still be red. "I'm fine. Why are you
here, Mulder?" She was careful to keep herself under control,
not wanting to give any of her disturbing feelings away. "I,
uh...I wanted to talk to you. About Jenny." "Mulder, there's
nothing to talk about." "Yes, Scully, there is. You know there
is. " He paused, perhaps waiting for a response, but Scully
couldn't think of anything appropriate to say, so she said
nothing. Finally, Mulder resumed. "Look, I'm sorry I
didn't tell you about her immediately. I just didn't know how to bring
it up." "Mulder, you didn't have to tell me anything at all.
You don't owe me anything." Mulder just looked at her, his face
a morass of pain. "Scully, I owe you everything," he whispered.
Scully sighed, and hugged him. He seemed to need it. "Go
home, Mulder. Or go to Jenny's. It's ok. Really it is. We're
partners. We're very good partners, it's true, but we're just
partners. I know that as well as you do." "Thank you, Scully.
Thank you for understanding." He gave her one last squeeze,
then let go and turned to leave. "See you in the morning?"
"I'll be there," she replied. After he left, she whispered,
"I'll always be there."

The next morning, Scully had been in the office an hour before
Mulder showed up. She was reviewing the files that had been
created in her absence when he walked in. "Late night last
night?" She asked as he sat down. He looked positively
exhausted. "You could say that. I haven't slept since I left
your apartment." Scully decided not to follow up on the
opening, though she sensed he wanted her to. Finally, he said,
"You won't be needing that number I gave you anymore." "Jenny's
number?" Scully asked, trying to sound neutral. Mulder nodded.
When he didn't say anything, she decided to bite. Softly, she
asked, "Mulder, what happened?" "Jenny woke up while I was
gone. When I got back, she asked where I had been. I told her.
She...didn't take it well." "She didn't think we..." "No,
nothing like that. I set her straight immediately on that
front. It didn't make a difference to her. She said she
wouldn't share me. It wasn't just you." Scully arched an
eyebrow, but said nothing. "We talked for hours. I don't
think she'd realized, really, what I...what we do. I told you
it'd been quiet while you were gone, and I meant it. It's been
like a regular 9 to 5 job. I told her that it wasn't always
like that, that I might be gone for days, or weeks, on end. She
didn't like that. Nor did she like that fact that, as she put
it, 'I would move heaven and earth for my partner.'" "Mulder,
I'm sorry. I really am. You deserve to find some happiness in
your personal life." Mulder smiled briefly. "It's ok. I
realized last night, while we were talking, that I didn't really
want to share me either. Besides, who needs a personal life?
I'll just live vicariously through you. And my video
collection." "Better stick to your video collection, then,
because I don't have a life either." Mulder smiled, this time a
real smile. Then he muttered something under his breath that Scully didn't catch.
"What?" "Nothing. You want me to go over those files
with you?"
