A-Team Doubles the Fun at CAT '99
Both teams qualify
for play-offs: CHS I Finishes 5th; CHS II 9th
The CHS Academic
Team made the long trek to Cookeville High School Saturday morning hoping
to duplicate last year's success when both teams made the play-offs.
The day got off to a rough start for Central’s first team of Lindsay Crowell,
Tony Grappin, Christie Stanford, and Jeremy Wear as a gallant come-back
attempt against Bartlett fell just short dropping the match 220-180.
The Lions recovered from the
defeat to reel off four straight wins in matches against Coffee County
II (185-60), Middle Tennessee Christian (325-50), Gatlinburg-Pittman I
(260-50), and Campbell County I (230-90) to finish the morning rounds 4-1
and advanced to the afternoon play-offs as the tournament 's tenth seed.
Meanwhile Central's second team of David Baron, Emily Senefeld, Sharon Thackston, and Sam Wantland was compiling a 4-1 record as well rolling up wins over Middle Tennessee Christian (280-40), Morristown-West II (230-100), Portland I (230-120) and Gordonsville (270-60). The team's lone defeat came at the hands of defending state champion Riverdale by a score of 370-160. Central's second team made the play-offs as the eleventh seed.
In thefirst round of the play-offs, CHS II ran up against a tough Halls team out of Knoxville and came out on the short end of a 220-190 score while CHS I rallied late to defeat Warren County I 190-150 setting up a quarterfinal match against perennial power Ezell-Harding. Central led the game at the half by a 90-80 score but Ezell-Harding would not be denied and hung on to record a 180--140 win.
The day was filled
with individual highlights as both Tony Grappin and Jeremy Wear
finished among the top fifteen scorers at the tournament. Jeremy
Wear ended the day as Central’s leading scorer with 280 points with Tony
Grappin not far behind at 250. Lindsay Crowell added 130 points for
CHS I. David Baron led a balanced CHS II team with 180 points.
Emily Senefeld tallied 120 with both Sharon Thackston and Sam Wantland
scoring 110. With the 120 points, Emily moved in to second place
on the Central High School all-time scoring list. Sam Wantland also
reached a personal milestone by surpassing the 1000 point mark in career
scoring.
Central's overall record now stands at 33 wins and 19 losses and they will next be in competition at Brookwood High School in Atlanta, Georgia on December 11th.
