The CHS Academic
Team traveled over 600 miles round trip this past weekend to compete in
the twelfth annual Brookwood Scholars Bowl. The tournament once again
set a record for most schools competing with a total of 169 teams from
14 states taking part in the day's events. Brookwood's tournament
is known for drawing the best teams throughout the southeast and this year
was no exception as the teams from Central quickly found out.
Central's
first team of Lindsay Crowell, Tony Grappin, Sharon Thackston, and Jeremy
Wear had the unenviable task of facing Dorman, South Carolina in the day's
first match. Dorman annually ranks among the top five teams in the
country and this year should again challenge for the national title.
They showed why in their match against CHS with a 370-120 victory.
The Lions were unable to get things going in the day's second match losing
to Cookeville 160-130 but did manage to recover in time to record three
straight victories in matches over Fayette County, Georgia (250-110), Dunwoody,
Georgia (240-110) and Tuscaloosa Central, Alabama (240-200) setting up
a match in the final round with a play-off berth on the line. Unfortunately,
the Lions fell to a strong Parkview, Georgia team by a score of 310-170
to finish the day at 3-3. Senior Tony Grappin led the team in scoring
with 220 points and in the process surpassed the 1000 point mark in career
scoring. Junior Jeremy Wear and senior Lindsay Crowell pitched in
160 and 130 points respectively while junior Sharon Thackston contributed
60 points to the cause.
The second team
fared no better than the first team as their day started with a 210-140
loss at the hands of Rockdale, Georgia. They followed that with a
240-120 win over Cherokee, Georgia but then suffered losses to Walton,
Georgia (310-170), Cookeville (240-150), and Fayette County, Georgia (240-120)
before they notched their second win of the day in the final match against
Mt. Zion, Kentucky 230-130. Junior Emily Senefeld led the second
team in scoring with 210 points and was assisted by sophomore Sam Wantland's
160 points. Seniors Robyn Boshers and Salvador Lopez tallied 110
and 20 points respectively.
Central will take a long holiday break and then return to competition January 22nd at Murfreesboro Riverdale.
