  • Part of "Drumz Space" appears on "Dead Set" as "Rhythm Devils". "Fire on the Mountain" appears on "Dead Set." "On the Road Again" appears on "Reckoning."
  • Trying to identify the song dates by what the band members are wearing I found to be tricky, because Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Brent, and Bill wore the same thing during every song, even though it is impossible that they were all from the same night. They must have known they were being filmed. Mickey, though, wears a dark T-shirt and a light blue denim-ish shirt during the acoustic numbers, but a light blue T-shirt with no over-shirt during the electric numbers from Halloween. I feel that it is highly likely that the acoustic numbers are from the same night, because everything looks so similar, and because all the electric numbers are from the same night it is seems the editors of the video liked to take large chunks from individual shows. So that means that the acoustic numbers are probably either from 10/22/80 or 10/27/80, the only two nights where the Dead played all four of the songs.
  • An interesting note, though, Billy is to the left of Mickey during "Bird Song" and "Ripple" but the drummers are on opposite sides of each other during "On the Road Again" and "To Lay Me Down." That's okay, though, either way, "Bird Song" segued directly into "Ripple" on either night, so they wouln't have had time to swap sides during those two songs, but they could have before then, since these were the last two numbers on both occasions.
  • See "Dead Set" and "Reckoning" for more music from this run.

  • The video from "U.S. Blues" seems like it is spliced together from several different performances, but the audio could all be from one performance, though that too is edited.
  • On the video, a little snipped of what sounds like "Not Fade Away" is audible right before "Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad," so this version of "GDTRFB" is almost certianly from 10/18/74, not 10/16/74, which came out of "Truckin'."
  • The "Truckin'" has a short "Caution"-style jam right after the song, so this version almost certainly from 10/19/74, not 10/16/74, which, as already mentioned, went into "Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad."
  • "Sugar Magnolia Sunshine Daydream" was only played once. It seems unlikely that the video editors would splice together the split "Sugar Magnolia" from 10/19/74 Set 2, thought that is a possibility.
  • "Playin' in the Band" is performed without Mickey (according to the video, though audio may be from a different night), and that only occurred on the first night of the run.
A careful review of "Steal Your Face" and my tape of 10/20/74, revealed that "Stella Blue" is not from that night, thus it must be from 10/17/74.
  • "Casey Jones" was only performed once during the run, 10/17/74. This version also appears on "Steal Your Face."
  • "Morning Dew" was only performed once during the run. It therefore must be from 10/18/74, and the jam/space that comes before it must be from the "Dark Star" from that night.
  • Mickey Hart is present during "Johnny B. Goode," so this performance must be from 10/20/74.
  • All songs except for "One More Saturday Night" and "Casey Jones" are cut by interludes. This video appears to be heavily edited, and the audio tracks may not match the video, so take the predictions here with a grain of salt.
  • See "Steal Your Face" for more music from this "final" tour.

Touch of Grey04:4705/09/872Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Monterey, Calif.Video

  • The opening of "Looks Like Rain" is clearly audible after the song. This was the only time "Touch of Grey" led into "Looks Like Rain" at an outdoor arena before 6/15/87 when the video was made. In addition, the timing on this seems about right.
  • The video shows staff members getting the skeletons together at the Rec. Area with Deadheads still milling about in the background, and at one point Gary Gutierrez, who produced the music video, says, "We let the audience go after the afternoon gig, and then we bring everybody back and we shoot with the band and the audience." Thus, the famous "Touch of Grey" video was also shot at the Laguna Seca Rec. Area in Monterey on 5/9/87.
