My Dear Maxine,

A few brief items of which you need for “the next stage”…

First off, as I boasted to a patron on the phone at the Berkeley Rep (a woman complaining of how the Rep was not performing any Asian-American works),

I “hear” that you’re work-in-progress is nearing completion (I said within six months, with a title of “Five Books of Peace”)…

The remarks were right off the top of my head, so forgive me if I am wrong. Plus, as I am sure that I’ve said before, you have my full permission to use anything that I’ve ever written you (you may even disguise the matter as a character if you so choose). A wee bit of compensation for all the headaches and grief that I am certain one like me brings to one like you…

Now on to the business matters. May be a bit risky, but the time has come for a certified letter to Chancellor Berdahl listing some specific reasonable complaints to the way that his University of California employees get away with treating me. Not in the Ovid style, rather, “just the facts, ma’am” (that phrase comes from the old television show “Dragnet,” I just discovered, I remember watching once in a while—out of curiosity—but not having that much indelibly etched…Oh well, who is to say why memory works the way Heavenly Empyreal records do).

1) This “affiant” Michelle Piquot/Piquant (she has aliases) on her “Molly Hatchet” psycho-ballistic “any evil necessary” all-out-warpath. I am going to appraise the Chancellor that this employee of U.C. has a very “troubling” history—prior to her “plum” assignment at U.C. Our network’s “information and belief” alleges that she was ordered by a court to seek psychiatric counseling for making false allegations of rape/sexual harassment against men who’d been “targeted” or singled out (under “color of law”) for said treatment. Since she “rolled over” on her “handlers,” in typical amoral “snitch-jacket” fashion, she had to be removed from her situation, and—drum roll please!—given a new one through the manifest abuse and misuse of the “Lewis and Carol” psychotropic “Traveling Hell Bardo Show” federal program designed for “Witness Protection.”

2) That I allegedly “made up” the pulled knife incident is greatly disturbing. To counter the “couldn’t poss-ibly have happened “ drivel drooling out of the corner’s of the mumblemouths in the Alamed Co. District Attorney’s Office—who can not possible claim any “immunity”from prosecution, qualified or otherwise, for this outrageous violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection (and “treatment under the law”)—why I refer you to “The Daily Californai,” 9/8/99, page 2, “News in Brief ”: “…Ronald Jackson, an 18 year old Oakland resident, was walking with friends when a group of individuals approached them and a fight broke out, said Berkeley police Lt. Bob Maloney… During the altercation, Jackson was stabbed by an attacker, police said…” Plus: “A woman was slashed three times at a Berkeley park Saturday after aqn attacker attempted to steal her wallet, police said yesterday…”

3) I won’t even deal with the front page stories for that issue: “Two Kidnapped Teens Raped in South Berkeley” or “Legal Battle Ties Up Kerouac’s Manuscripts” (the latter involving a “startingly coincidental” argument over an alleged  “grandmother’s forged will” cheating us all out of that tender-hearted writer’s manuscripts as Jack’s phony “family” keeps on trying to “milk that cash cow that fell from grace” into the muck of their barnyard, so to speak…). All I will say is that my reputation with females/and or children is impeccable—I “pass up opportunites,” perhaps, according to the more “traditionally privileged” male point of view (that 50’s dinosaur threatening to take over by steamrolling  again), but I honest to heaven am quite pleased with the quality of my interaction with women…Maybe along the lines of what I felt this A.M., after the lightening storm and soft rain of last night, softening the dusty, summer-baked ground…Such sweet and pungent fragrances reached my nostrils so immediately through the purified air that I was made to pause…That shard of a moment leading me back, through the immediacy of memory, to my Boy Scout summer Camp Barton, believe it or not, to a time when I was truly happy (admittedly one of my few). That month along the shores of Lake Cayuga was my saving grace those early teen years. Nobody knew about my Okay-on-the-outside-horribly-dysfucntional-on-the-inside alleged “family,” from whose psychological abuse I was safely removed… At Camp, with the gentle counseling of great adults like Mr. Griggs and Mr. Silsbee (neither of who made as much money or had the job status of ole John the Tyrant), for the first time I really trusted adults—especially men. The stately, standing tall trees all around me on my solitary hikes on the many trails to and from the center of Camp, had no neurotic impulses to belittle me—vain attempts to “look good a the kid’s expense”—and some deeply felt peace would descend in such a benevolent way that I’d truly feel, Yes indeed, God is a kind and caring person…How remarkable to be that way for us—in spite of ourselves…

Gotta run,

Love Tom

                              economic interests," Judge
                              Edmunds wrote in her
                              decision.

                              Lane, a 32-year old

                              nursing student and Ford
                              enthusiast who owns six
                              Ford vehicles, began the
Web site in 1998 with the
                              blessing of company
                              officials as a forum for
                              articles about the Ford
                              Mustang sports car.

                              Late last year, he began

                              anonymously receiving
                              confidential Ford
                              documents. He testified
                              last month that he had
                              received about 112
                              documents in all, some
                              mailed to his house and
                              others tossed in the back
                              of his Ford F-150 pickup
                              truck.

                              Ford accused Lane of

                              violating a state law
                              prohibiting the disclosure
                              of trade secrets and of
                              acting maliciously by
                              publishing reams of
                              confidential Ford
                              documents with the message
                              "DOWNLOAD NOW" the day
                              after the automaker said
                              it would file a lawsuit.

                              "First Amendment Wins,"

                              the Web site read on
                              Tuesday. "This once again
                              demonstrates that average
                              Americans CAN do
                              remarkable things when it
                              comes to our
                              freedoms.....even when
                              faced by huge corporations
                              such as the Ford Motor
                              Company!"

                              Edmunds also ruled that

                              Lane must identify all the
                              Ford documents in his
                              possession, how he
                              obtained them and from
                              whom. The judge said Ford
                              presented "substantial
                              evidence" that Lane had
                              violated the Michigan
                              Uniform Trade Secrets Act.
                              She also noted that courts
                              are just starting to
                              grapple with balancing
                              free speech on the
                              Internet and protection of
                              intellectual property.

                              "In this case, the battle

                              is won by the First
                              Amendment," Edmunds wrote.

                              Ford said in a statement

                              it was pleased with the
                              decision because Edmunds
                              ruled that Lane's copying
                              of Ford internal documents
                              violated copyright laws.

                              "It was a very difficult

                              issue. The judge had to
                              balance some tremendously
                              important interests and
                              rights," said Ford
                              spokesman Terry Bresnihan.
                              "We're generally pleased."

                              Bresnihan said Ford

                              attorneys have not decided
                              on whether to appeal the
                              judge's ruling. He added
                              the automaker is
                              conducting an
                              investigation into how the
                              documents leaked out.
